My approach is to see where you stand and what you are capable of. Spelling is taught by a combination of sounds and phonics. As soon as that is in place, reading becomes easier and more fun. I don"t take one sound at a time, but use a few different sounds in different word combinations. Pictures or objects can be used to establish the sound/word/short sentence. I teach students from the age of 5-12, both in English as well as in Afrikaans.
