About John

A professional guitarist and songwriter with over 10 years' experience. I regularly release music under my own name and can be found on all major streaming sites. I have worked as a session guitarist and bass player for artists in performances throughout London and the UK. I have taught in schools and privately, and continue to teach in Nottingham schools (secondary and primary) and Southwark Music service as a part-time tutor. Additional areas which may interest my learners, and add value to their lessons include, - A great deal of experience in music production, having written, mixed, and mastered works for myself, other artists, and documentary film-makers using Sibelius and Logic Pro X. - I hold a degree in Music performance from Leeds University, and a Master's degree from Goldsmiths College in Popular Music Studies. - I hold a valid UK DBS check.

Whether you're taking your first steps, or have been playing for a while, my guitar lessons are well suited to take your playing and passion to the next level! With a degree in Jazz guitar performance and a background in blues/rock playing, I'm a big believer in following the passion of the student and am well suited to teach styles such as pop, rock, Neo-soul, jazz, hip-hop, soul, funk, and country. In my lessons you'll be playing songs immediately. It is my practice and belief the best way to learn is to do, and I have many lesson plans which utilise popular songs to help learn specific techniques, chords, picking, melodic lines, and improvisation. In addition to this I would encourage students to suggest songs they enjoy listening to that we can unpick together in the lesson, and create practice exercises from the music they enjoy listening to. Lessons are 30, 45, or 60 minutes, and take place in a relaxed home studio in Nottingham. Lessons can also be offered online or at the home of the learner with travel costs included.

Find out more about John

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I've always adored music, and my fondest memories are of being sat in my parents car listening to The Beatles. My love for guitar came as I began listening to musicians like Jimi Hendrix, and I began to dream of playing just like them! My passion grew as I taught myself to play by ear, and built upon my skills when I began to study music formally.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I love a wide variety of styles, from rock/ soul, to pop and jazz. I have never been one to stick to a single style, however, if I had to pick.. David Bowie's Space Oddity and Spiders From Mars just never gets old!
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

My approach to teaching starts with a solid foundation in scales, chords, picking, and fret knowledge. Then as I build my students from here, I find the most exciting and riveting learning happens as we explore songs the students loves, breaking them down and understanding the techniques and skills needed to replicate the sounds themselves!
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Very difficult to say unless you find someone who has learnt every single instrument!

To be serious though, it is not a mastery of guitar or any other instrument that we should be aiming for, it is a mastery of music that we enact through our instruments. Each instrument can be as hard or as easy as the players approach demands, and we all have our own journeys to go on!
  • What are your keys to success?

Persistence, positivity, and, humility. Stay disciplined in your practise, be positive about your improvement, and be open to learning. You'll be a master.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

David Bowie, as through all the cigarette smoke I'm pretty sure I could convince him to give me a ride on the spaceship! George Harrison, as I'd love to hear him talk about the deeper meaning of life and spirituality. Eddie Hazel, I think it would be a little crazy but definitely worth it.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

Get comfortable striving and learn to love the process of learning, not the imagined end result. Remember that you are also a part of the guitar and need to be looked after. Exercise, good food, hobbies and friendships will make your musical journey sustainable and enjoyable!
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I build clear aims into your lesson schedule so we can measure how you are improving, and provide worksheets to help you structure your learning. I have a constant communication with regards to your goals, and most importantly, I'm honest!
