About Bernd
I am a guitarist and composer, living in Brighton, UK. Apart from teaching guitar, I run a youth orchestra and a community orchestra, and I regularly perform around the UK and Europe with various projects. I teach from my home in Brighton, where my wife Rosie also teaches piano. Sometimes (when she's on holiday from music college) our daughter also teaches cello – at which point we turn into a mini music school! Apart from music I'm interested in many other things – cooking, astronomy, films and backgammon among them : )

I have been teaching guitar in a wide variety of styles for 20+ years, working with students of abilities ranging from beginners to those about to attend music college. I studied jazz, contemporary and popular music at graduate level and classical composition at postgraduate level, and have been performing on acoustic and electric guitar, often with singers, for many years. I believe that I am able to respond appropriately to the needs and interests of any student. I’m just as happy to work on the technical details of a fully notated classical piece as I am to explore improvisation in a jazz context, or to work with a student on accompanying techniques and songwriting. At any level, I will try to weave a certain amount of music theory into the instrumental lessons. Not only will this enrich the wider musical knowledge of the student, but it is very conducive in the understanding of the instrument itself. In my experience it is very satisfying for students to be able to cross-reference the practical and theoretical aspects of music making. Lessons with me take place in an encouraging and friendly atmosphere; I believe that a relaxed and reassuring environment is the best starting point for any instrumental tuition. I have found that for some pupils, instrumental lessons are – at least initially – all about confidence building; for others, lessons are about harnessing their musical talent in a structured way. I find it as rewarding to guide a complete beginner to confidently play a simple melody, as to perfect the intricacies of interpretation and performance with advanced students.
