About James

I'm James. I'm 37, and I've been playing guitar since 1996. I taught guitar, chorus, and general music in Baltimore City Schools for 5 years, and have been teaching private guitar lessons since 2009. I have taken lessons and master classes from world class guitarists like David Russell, Steve Herberman, and Roland Dyens. I graduated with a bachelor's in music education in 2014 from Towson University.

My teaching style is all about what my individual students want and need:

I tailor my instruction to your musical interests and skill level, and teach you the best way to achieve what you want with guitar

I teach you to be literate in music, so you can use

Visual diagrams

I teach you the elements of music, so you understand how your favorite songs work.

I teach you safe posture and efficient technique to help you play comfortably and musically, and avoid repetitive stress injuries.

I love to help people reach their personal goals and learn to express themselves. I like to spread the same love of the guitar and music theory that I developed as a young person.

I started teaching a family friend 10 years ago, and really enjoyed it. I helped him play at his older sister's wedding in 2010.

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Towson University. I have studied guitar with Fred Moss, Robert Winter, Michael Decker, Steve Herberman, and taken master classes with David Russell and Roland Dyens.

About the lesson

I assess their current skill and ability and suggest technique, theory, and repertoire based on students' interests and level.

I taught Guitar, General Music, Music History, and directed Choirs in Baltimore City public schools for 5 years, at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. I've taught students of all ages, from 5 to 60+, and all levels. I've had former students pursue music degrees.

You want a teacher that is going to be patient and honest, and who is going to make you do the work. Teachers who talk and show off how great they are at the guitar too much aren't helping you become better at guitar.

I taught a beginner guitar camp in Columbia and the kids were all great! They played an arrangement I made of "Old Town Road."
