About Jerry

I teach guitar and bass from beginning to advanced. Each lesson is customized to keep the students engaged and progressing. The first lesson is free of charge with no obligation.

I enjoy starting people on a lifelong musical journey. You can learn just a couple of simple chords and entertain yourself and others for the rest of your life. Or you can continue educating yourself, discovering new techniques, styles, chords, scales and music theory.

Many years ago I became a student of a great guitar player named Dan Mitchell in Abilene TX. Dan had a great guitar store in Abilene and I was a patron of theirs starting around 12 years old. As I began to play professionally around the area, eventually the Mitchell family had a teacher opening and asked me to go to work for them. I began teaching there in around 1986.

I have been playing guitar and bass professionally for over 35 years. I currently play in a few different projects including a country band, a worship band and an acoustic duo. I have been teaching guitar off and on for over 20 years.

About the lesson

I start by asking questions about what you want to accomplish. Guitar lessons should be tailored for individuals. Some want to learn theory, some want to learn chords and strumming or fingerpicking styles to accompany vocals, some want to learn lead guitar styles and techniques. Once I determine what the student wants we chart a course for success that gets them off the ground fast so that they don't get discouraged and they learn to love the instrument.

I have worked with students ranging in age from 6 years old to 85 years old. I have worked with beginners and I have worked with advanced players who were trying to learn new ideas.

There are so many tools out there to learn. Many more than when I was a young guitar student.

Find a teacher that you are comfortable with and one that will encourage and push you to learn.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about what you hope to accomplish with lessons. Also think about what kind of time you have to devote to practice. I try to encourage daily practice. Even if it is only 30 minutes per day, if you don't pick up the guitar between lessons you are wasting money.

Details

I like to keep lessons at around 45 minutes and I charge $30 for each lesson here at my home studio.

If a student prefers that I travel to their house, the rate can be discussed.
