About Jacob

Hello! Thank you so much for looking at my teaching profile. My philosophy of teaching is centered around the styles of music and songs that the individual student is interested in. Techniques, theory, chords and notes are taught through these songs - which keeps motivation and enjoyment high! I also like to work a student's personality into lessons through experimentation, creativity and gently-guided songwriting. More than holding to a rigid methodology or book, I want a student to make their instrument their own creature - and to enjoy it for many years to come!

I particularly enjoy all of the different personalities I get to work with - and seeing how those personalities come out in playing styles! I can think of a brother and sister I teach; he is much more naturally geared towards playing chords and struggles with single notes, while she is doing great with her single notes, but struggles with chords! Watching their personalities come out in their playing, in conversations between songs, and working with them to overcome specific challenges is a great joy.

I spent some time at Berklee College of Music studying theory and songwriting. I left and began working at a local music studio as one of their teachers for guitar, piano, bass and drums. During this time I also began working for myself as a private instructor. Now I have been teaching for near seven years, and finished a specialization program from UCI's extension school in Online Teaching. I teach primarily online now through mediums such as Zoom, Google Meet or Skype.

About the lesson

We will typically begin by naming some styles of music and individual bands/songs the student enjoys. From there we cover each aspect of playing piano - theory, chords, technique, and reading sheet music - in the context of the styles and songs they enjoy. This keeps motivation high as we grow closer each week to playing their favorite music.

I have experience with many ages, from 5 years old through to the 60s. Through my lessons and other serving stations I have had the wonderful opportunity to work with students with special needs, and would be happy to begin a conversation with parents on how to best serve their child.

Teachers are as varied as their personalities - don't just find someone who can teach you piano; find someone who you click with and are comfortable with. My own teachers through the years have grown to be wonderful friends, and my appreciation of who they were helped fuel my love for an instrument in lessons with them.
