About William

Alongside 23 years playing experience, Will also has 17 years teaching experience, which includes students of all ages, in both groups and as individuals with a wide range of abilities. He has forged successful student/teacher relationships with a range of pupils, from those who are just beginning on their musical journey, or who simply want to casually learn an instrument in a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere, all the way to more experienced players already looking at highly advanced repertoire, and who are seeking assistance in passing high-level examinations or aid in preparation for A-level or University-level recitals … or indeed beyond!

In 2015 Will graduated from Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge with an Upper First Class mark in a BA (Hons) Music degree, and alongside majoring in Contemporary Composition and Musicology, he was also awarded the Mark Devin Music Performance Prize for outstanding achievement in his Performance studies. As an artist and performer, Will has been commission by the likes of Tate, Kettle's Yard Gallery, Arts Council England, Stanley Picker Gallery, British School at Rome, Cambridge Zoology Museum, Club Inégales, Wysing Arts Centre, Cambridge School of Art, and The Paul Hamlyn Foundation, as well as working alongside a range of esteemed musicians/ensembles.

In 2018 he completed a postgraduate degree in Education, where he specialised in democratic and inclusive teaching within the arts. In 2021 he graduated with distinction from the MA Sound Arts course at the Centre for Research into Sound Arts Practice (CRiSAP) at London College of Communication: University of the Arts, London, where he is now a PhD student.

Will began playing the Classical Guitar when he was 8 years old, and by his early teens was performing regularly, alongside having also taught himself at great length how to play the electric, acoustic, and bass guitars. As a teenage guitarist Will achieved a Grade 8 Distinction in Classical Guitar (and equivalent theory qualifications), and now specialises in mostly contemporary repertoire, premiering several new works, with recent concerts at Aldeburgh Festival (Jubilee Hall); West Road Concert Hall, Cambridge; Mumford Theatre, Cambridge; British Institute, Florence; and British Art School, Rome.

Alongside this, Will has spent many years performing in pop/rock bands, usually as principal songwriter, lead guitarist, keyboardist, synthesizer player, electronic musician, and backing vocalist. In these arenas Will employs a focus on translating his classical training into a more popular language, and experimenting with the sonic possibilities of both analogue and digital guitar-based technologies. This work has seen Will perform internationally, appearing at several major venues and festivals.

Will is also a member and former student ambassador of the British Association for Performing Arts Medicine (BAPAM), and as such can offer specialised musicians’ healthcare and wellbeing advice, including regarding posture, physical maintenance, performance anxiety, and more.

Will teaches at home, in the centre of Cambridge, where he has a dedicated and sound-proofed music/teaching room, with very high quality listening facilities, big screen displays, and a large library of music scores, musical recording resources, and equipment (as well as a collection of over 2000+ records!). There is also free, private car/bike parking.

Will is currently a Lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University, where he delivers a range of modules (including Music Performance Studies, Composition, Music Education, Music History, Critical Music Studies), across various Music pathways, as well as teaching across Media & Communications, Film Studies, and Fine Art. He is also a PhD student within the Creative Research in Sound Arts Practice (CRiSAP) department at London College of Communication: University of the Arts, London, where he is also a visiting lecturer in improvisation on their Masters course. He is the teacher of guitar Hills Road Sixth Form College, Cambridge, and a Wysing Studio Artist 2024-2029.

Will does not believe in teaching using one specific style, but rather prefers to adopt a different approach based on the personality and interests of the pupil, choosing a teaching method that he believes will be most beneficial to the student; one which evolves and grows alongside the student and material covered. Will aims to design bespoke learning resources for each individual student, and prefers to see lessons as a collaborative endeavour, to achieving students' goals.

Will teaches using standard notation, TAB, and/or aurally/by ear, and should students wish to enter in for examinations he can offer advice regarding exam boards and repertoire, and is happy to teach the material selected by the student. Additionally, Will believes it is important to include a sense of context and background to what a student is learning as this helps develop appropriate playing/performance/style techniques for the piece or song.
