About Gonçalo

My name is Gonçalo, I am a Portuguese guitarist and I finished my Advanced Diploma degree at the Royal Academy of Music. I have completed my Bachelors and Master in the Academy with first class honours and with the highest recital mark in the department. I am a guitar teacher in King’s College of London and I also have the LRAM (Licenciate of the Royal Academy of Music), which is a licence and certificate to teach music.
I have won multiple international competitions, the most relevant being The Prince’s Prize. I introduce and prepare students for ABRSM exams and all my students always get very good results! I always try to make my lessons fun for younger students, to keep them as interested as possible. As for older students, I always look for the most logical and straightforward way to teach.

About the lesson

I always introduce the appropriate technique from the beginning, but I have a good understanding of the hands of each person. I always adapt what I teach to what feels more comfortable for a student, so that the student develops a very efficient technique.
For younger students, I make my lessons as interactive as possible, so that besides learning guitar, they learn theory at the same time. I do this by doing Rhythm games, word play to memorise the notes on the stave and specific rhythms etc.
For adults, I am flexible based on what is preferred, but I like to be more objective.

Gonçalo is simply the most special teacher we have ever had. We’ve had lessons with him for the past 5 years and will continue for as long as he’ll have us!

He can handle my 7year old with ADHD and a sullen teenager… He’s incredibly engaging, his teaching and ability to pass on knowledge are superb and he’s just a lovely calming presence to have around. He’s extremely committed and flexible when needed, has incredible depth to pass on musically and amazing ability to connect with a student.

Besides being an incredibly skilled and proficient guitarist, Gonçalo has an almost "second-nature" ability to identify and assess any struggles you're facing in your playing and develop one or more possible strategies to address and resolve the issues presented. All of this, coupled with strong people skills and an ease of communication make him an ideal teacher for guitarists of all ages and levels.

Gonçalo is an amazing guitar player/teacher. I had the pleasure of learning a lot with him and even had the possibility of seeing him prepare a parade with 4 people that he taught, in collaboration with the school of his hometown. Extremely fun and able to captivate anyone with his passion for music.
Learning with Gonçalo is giving a huge jump on the guitar and on the world of music. Today I don't play, but one thing that he taught me and I will remember for the rest of my life is how to actually ear music.
