Mr. Harris is a wonderful teacher and person. His insights have helped me advance my career and higher education journey. He has a down-to-earth and extremely pragmatic approach. I highly recommend working with Mr. Harris!
Scott is calm and reasonable. He does not tell you what to think. He helps you think about things on your own. He respects you, and gets you to think for yourself, understand your position, and consider evidence and alternatives. He is comfortable with different points of view and different alternatives.
He thinks deep, but explains simple and well. He targets his explanations to the students’ context.
You profit from his decades of experience in education.
Me, I have known Scott as a fellow professional since 2015, almost 8 years ago. We've had lots of conversations about all things teaching and education: teaching methods, teaching styles, learning styles, discipline, the nature of education, science, the nature of science, scientific method, philosophy, the importance of philosophy in education, working through the COVID times, sports, fitness, psychology, grading, planning courses, etc. He is always friendly, kind, and professional.
I think you’ll benefit from working with Scott — and the longer you work with him and the more you “pick his brain,” the more you’ll get out of it. I’d recommend thinking what you can learn from him that’ll help in college, and what you can learn from him that will help later in life and at work. I recommend you think big, and make the most of your time with him, his mind, and his thinking.Scott Harris was my Philosophy teacher in high school over 10 years ago. Of any teacher I have had, before or since, he made by far the biggest impact on my life.
Mr. Harris taught me to examine my biases and approach all arguments with an open mind. Before I took his classes, I had no idea how many of my closely held beliefs were underpinned by logical fallacies. I am now able to engage with people of differing views and actively listen instead of just waiting for my turn to speak. He also taught me the value of playing the devil's advocate to fully explore an idea.
Perhaps most importantly, Mr. Harris did not teach me to agree with him. Instead, he instilled in me the idea that one should always continue to challenge their own beliefs and be willing to change their mind when presented with a rational argument supported by evidence.
I am immensely grateful to Mr. Harris for the way he helped me hone my critical thinking skills as a young man.I’m a former student of Mr. Harris! I was a high school student of his for several years. He’s one of the most memorable teachers I’ve ever had. I still use tips and lessons that he’s taught, today in my life, 15 years later. Such a great guy to learn from!
Mr. Harris was one of my personal favorite teachers. He challenged his students, but was also a very interesting person, and taught material in an engaging, but easily understandable way. He’s also a no “B.S.” professor. He once crumpled and discarded a student’s exam in progress because he was cheating, so he will not accept anything less than honest and complete effort.
In my senior year of high school, I took his AP Macroeconomics course in the fall semester of 2012. Mr. Harris went far beyond what was expected of him by the College Board, as he masterfully placed the required tenets of macroeconomics to be learned into their proper historical, cultural, and moral context, for he understood that economic platitudes and graphs taught in an academic vacuum are devoid of meaning. The field of economics has long since been branded as “the dismal science”—a defamatory remark that none of Mr. Harris’ students would even think to utter, given the life he breathed into the subject daily. Notwithstanding being prepared for the AP exam and being able to dissect real world economic policy and its consequences, Mr. Harris’ course is the single course in my formative years that prepared me for all post-secondary education, for he cultivated habits of virtue that are requisite for being a successful student of any discipline. As the course drew towards a close, I felt competent—and thus confident—to be able to take on any scholastic challenge in the future, but this ultimately came with a cost that all students of Mr. Harris can attest to: the grief that comes with the realization that your time with him is over. In the second semester of my senior year, the promised land for many suffering from senioritis, I forewent my lunch period everyday so I could sit at the front of the room in his Philosophy course, for nothing could rival my hunger for learning the art of living well as taught by Scott Harris.
The skills of independent thought, academic vitality, and preparedness that Mr. Harris polishes in each of his students allowed me to make quick work of undergraduate challenges while my colleagues suffered from a prolonged adjustment period to the way things work in university settings—it cannot be overstated that learning the hard lessons before you get to college is invaluable. After earning my bachelor's degree, I spent two years teaching high school in the same district as Scott, where he was my most trusted colleague. Despite teaching what most would consider vastly different subjects, Scott was able to help me design curriculum, but most important of all he helped me flourish as a new teacher because I had an unbreakable classroom culture.
From there I went on to medical school, where still I was able to lean on the lessons learned from Mr. Harris. Whether it was my preclinical didactic coursework, my clinical clerkships, or my yearlong teaching fellowship where I took on a professorial role to students of the Master of Biomedical Sciences (MBS) and the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) programs, the imprint left on me by my time with Scott Harris as his student and colleague has given me the tools I need to be successful.
As I reflect on my academic journey on the eve of becoming a resident physician, I have had no greater teacher than Scott Harris, as he taught me not just macroeconomics and philosophy, but he taught me to reap the many rewards of investigating all disciplines—he taught me to be a proper student and citizen in a free society. I not only recommend him without any reservation, but I strongly urge any reading this to actively seek him out.I had a rough time in high school. I got in with the wrong crowd, partook in risky teenage shenanigans, fought with my mom. For a while it looked like I wouldn’t reach the potential I had shown in elementary and middle school. Mr. Harris was my AP Psychology and AP Macroeconomics teacher my junior year. He took his job incredibly seriously - took pride in dressing up for class, brought a heavy wooden desk and fountain pens for grading, treated us like adults. He was by far the best lecturer I’d encountered up to that point in my life and only a handful have eclipsed him or come close in the years since. He was engaging and magnetic and inspired us all to give a damn. He was a tough grader but a patient tutor, no question ever went unanswered or concept underdeveloped as long as we expressed interest. I started looking forward to school again, to believe that I was the sort of person that could excel. When he was no longer my teacher he kept up with me, nominating me for the Harvard Book Prize my senior year. I went on to graduate from Duke University in three years in 2021 and will graduate from Stanford Law School this June. I won’t forget his mentorship or the intellectual investment he made in me as a lost kid (though I’m sure he never knew the extent of my gratitude).
I had the privilege of being a student in Mr. Harris's class, and I can confidently say that he is an exceptional teacher who excels at effectively communicating complex material. Mr. Harris possesses a unique ability to break down intricate concepts into easily understandable pieces, making even the most challenging subjects accessible to all students. His passion for teaching is evident in his enthusiastic and engaging approach to every lesson. He goes above and beyond to ensure that every student grasps the material by using various teaching methods and providing ample opportunities for discussion and clarification. Mr. Harris's dedication to his students' success is truly commendable. He creates a supportive and inclusive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and seeking help. His patience and willingness to go the extra mile to ensure that every student comprehends the material is truly remarkable.
For years, Scott Harris has been instrumental in helping write lesson plans for a non-profit organization, which has served over 400,000 educators. His passion is seeing students exceed their own expectations. Scott has my highest recommendation.
