About Kumudvati

I am a Veterinarian. I have been learning music since I was four years old, I am classically trained. I have also been playing guitar for seven years. I have been trained in Tabla for the last 16 years, I teach both solo playing as well as accompaniment.

About the lesson

The first thing I would like to clarify about my classes is that they are disabled-friendly, accommodating of neurodivergence and a safe and happy place for everyone. Most students already have an idea of what to expect from the classes that they're taking. I first would like to clear what their goal is, whether it is to learn a new skill from scratch, improvement, clarifying and strengthening basics or fine tuning. In arts and disciplines like music (specifically when it comes to singing) it is important to clarify to the student whether they are tone deaf (in which case they could take up an instrument or percussion) before agreeing to teach them something that may or may not be possible for them to be self-sufficient in doing.

When it comes musical instruments, the teaching method I follow is to teach a concept with examples and visualisation and ask the student to mimic before they innovate.

Tell us more about your subject. How did you develop an interest in this field?
Music is vast to say the very least. It is limitless and can be a discipline, a science or even an art. I have been training since I was about five years old and as and when my understanding of music got deeper I gained a keen interest in it.
What or who is the motivation behind you choosing to teach & why?
My friends are mostly responsible for me deciding to teach music. I had started teaching some of them casually and had been enjoying it and they convinced me to take it to the next level !
How does your work help society?
I believe that music is very important for community building, identity as well as therapy. It is a form of personal expression and an outlet to express emotions in a healthy way. Music discourse is a very important social activity, lots of communities and relationships form based on this and as someone who teaches music and tries to make this process more palatable, I feel it's pretty much a responsibility!
If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of & why?
My role models are mostly revolutionary artists like Nayyara Noor, Iqbal Bano, Nina Simone and Bob Marley. Art is truly so powerful and they use their art to do things so powerful.
Tell us about your hobbies outside teaching.
Teaching is actually the "hobby" here. I am a veterinary student when I'm not teaching!

Nothing particularly spectacular as of now.
