English Literature is best understood as a multifaceted discipline, given that it encompasses many other subjects such as history, psychology and philosophy. Whilst there is a leap in the complexity of ideas expected in the A level compared to the GCSE, this is nothing to be overwhelmed by. On the contrary, this allows the student wider freedom in navigating prose, poetry and drama.
My first lessons with each student will be focused on deep reading of their chosen texts and annotation. I will also offer resources so that they can read around the subject, as exam boards emphasise the importance of linking historical context to authorial intent. After that, we will look at essay planning under timed conditions. Eventually, we will look at structuring a full essay.
