About Rachel

When a student says “I’m just not a math person,” I look for the explanation, pace and practice that will help the ideas make sense.

I’m Rachel, the teacher behind Lumina Tutoring. I am a BC-certified teacher with over 20 years of teaching experience, a BA in Mathematics and Psychology, and a B.Ed in Secondary Mathematics. I hold a Mental Health First Aid certificate and understand BC curriculum, assessment expectations and the Proficiency Scale.

My strength is identifying where understanding breaks down, then explaining the missing steps clearly. Students can ask questions, make mistakes and work through difficult ideas without feeling rushed or judged. We build both the skills needed for the current course and the confidence to tackle new problems independently.

I support students with ADHD, autism, mental health barriers and any IEP designation. Instruction is adapted to the individual, with clear structure, manageable tasks, visual explanations and flexible pacing. Homeschooling families can also receive math teaching, lesson planning and assessment support.

Online lessons are available for West Vancouver, Vancouver, Tsawwassen, Ladner, South Delta and across BC. In-person lessons in the Lower Mainland depend on location and availability. I accept AFU funding.

Math tutoring that helps students understand what to do, why it works and how to use it independently.

HOW WE WORK
We begin with the student’s current course, questions and goals. I look at how they approach a problem to identify gaps in understanding, then explain the concept in clear, manageable steps. We work through examples together before the student applies the method with increasing independence.

Lessons can focus on catching up, homework understanding, test preparation or deeper mathematical challenge. Guided practice, visual explanations and questions that check understanding help students learn to choose a method and explain their reasoning.

INDIVIDUALIZED SUPPORT
For students with ADHD, autism, mental health barriers or any IEP designation, we discuss the supports that work for that learner. Clear routines, smaller tasks, flexible pacing and breaks can help make lessons manageable. Homeschooling families can arrange ongoing math instruction, curriculum planning and assessment support.

ONLINE AND IN-PERSON
One-to-one online lessons are available to students in West Vancouver, Vancouver, Tsawwassen, Ladner, South Delta and across BC. In-person arrangements depend on location and availability. AFU funding is accepted.
