About Lauren
I am a current Biochemistry student at UC San Diego who transferred from San Jose City College. I have been tutoring in English for about 2 years, working with peers of different ages, ethnicities, and even fellow students with disabilities. I am an immigrant from the Philippines, and as such, I have a strong drive to help students who have English as their second language.
I have tutored more than a hundred peers at San Jose City College. In the Reading and Writing Center, we conducted a survey to get feedback on our tutoring, and our results show that 95% of students are satisfied and successful with their reading and writing assignments. Many students I have tutored have become my friends through tutoring because they come back and personally thank me for helping them get an A for their grade. While these students are mostly from ESL and English courses, we do not discriminate at the Reading and Writing Center--all students, as long as they have a reading and writing assignment, are welcome.
While I do not have an English degree, I have been writing since high school. I used to be the Associate Editor in our school paper, and have won a few feature writing national and regional competitions in the Philippines. This background helped me immensely in my job as an English peer tutor.

I am a Biochemistry major on the pre-med track, but I have always loved reading and writing growing up, and this passion paved the way to my career as a peer tutor in English. I have been tutoring for 5 semesters in San Jose City College, and while that may seem like a short time, I have encountered different peers that have enriched that experience. Students with English as their second language, of different ethnicities, with disabilities, of any level of understanding of English, are all welcome to me.
