About Evelyn
I graduated from University of Leeds with a BSc in Zoology with first-class honours and Dean's List every year; plus three awards: Yorkshire Agricultural Society Medal; Leeds Naturalists' Prize in Zoology and Centenary Prize in Animal Nutrition. This gives you a scope of my academic understanding of Biology. During the degree I engaged most with 'gritty' biological modules such as Nutrition, Development and Parasitology so have a very strong understanding of the sort of content found on the British Biology GCSE and A Level courses.
Since graduation I have been working internationally at various sea turtle conservation sites enjoying time in Greece, Ascension Island and the Cayman Islands. A large component of any conservation project is public outreach and I have really enjoyed these scientific education opportunities. In particular in Grand Cayman I have delivered lectures to students in their penultimate years of school study on turtle biology, conservation and life as a Zoology student and conservationist.
During the pandemic, I used my time to attain a TESOL certificate so I have an understanding of broadly applicable pedagogy and am looking forward to integrating my Biological background and this training in tutoring GCSE and ALevel Biology online.
Outside of work I love learning - I have been studying Spanish online with Duolingo (I have a streak of over 450 days!). I have also recently completed a Yoga Teacher Training and am now certified to teach internationally. I also sail monohull yachts and have a lovely soft dog called Mylie who you might get to meet!

I love bringing my passion for Biology (particularly Zoology!) to my students and helping them find connection with difficult course content. When working with new students I like to use past exam questions to help myself understand which areas of the curriculum we should be paying extra attention to together.
When planning my lessons I like to work closely with previous exam material to ensure that my students will not only be understanding course content but also synthesizing ideas in a way that ensures them top marks on exam day. I like to draw on my experiences studying Zoology and working in conservation to make dry subjects a little more engaging and help really open up inaccessible concepts.
I know from my own school experiences that the subjects I found it easiest to engage with were often presented by the most personable teacher. I therefore think building a supportive and friendly rapport with my student is almost as important as the lesson content itself. I like to offer an encouraging environment to build a students' confidence in their abilities and really guide them to getting the top grades come exam day!
