About the lesson

# Phonics Lesson Plan

**Grade Level:** Kindergarten

**Duration:** 30-40 minutes

**Objective:**
Students will be able to identify and pronounce the short vowel sound /a/ and recognize words that contain this sound.

**Materials:**
- Whiteboard and markers
- Flashcards with pictures and words (cat, hat, rat, mat, bat, sat)
- Worksheets for practice
- Short story or poem featuring short /a/ words
- Audio recording of words with short /a/

**Lesson Outline:**

1. **Introduction (5 minutes)**
- Begin with a brief review of the vowels (A, E, I, O, U).
- Introduce the short vowel sound /a/ using the letter 'a'.
- Demonstrate the sound by saying it clearly and encouraging students to repeat it.

2. **Direct Instruction (10 minutes)**
- Show flashcards with pictures and words that contain the short /a/ sound.
- Say each word aloud and emphasize the /a/ sound (e.g., "cat" - /kæt/).
- Ask students to repeat after you, focusing on the correct pronunciation.

3. **Guided Practice (10 minutes)**
- Engage students in a group activity where they identify words with the short /a/ sound from a list.
- Use a whiteboard to write down words as students call them out.
- Play the audio recording and have students clap each time they hear the /a/ sound.

4. **Independent Practice (10 minutes)**
- Distribute worksheets that include matching pictures with words, filling in blanks, and circling the correct short /a/ words.
- Allow students to work independently while you circulate to offer help as needed.

5. **Closure (5 minutes)**
- Gather students and read a short story or poem that includes several short /a/ words.
