About Emily
A friendly, versatile tutor, over 10 years of tutoring experience.
Location: Online / London / Surrey
I hold a PhD in English Language and Literature (with a history / music angle) from a Russell Group University. I also have an MA in Medieval and Renaissance Studies from University College London (English and History), and a BA in English Language and Literature/History/Musicology.
I am very passionate about my subjects and about teaching! I have worked as a private tutor in English language and literature, QTS English, creative writing, essay writing technique. and history across various ages and levels. My English tutoring has ranged from 7+ to University Level. I have also worked as a university English and linguistics tutor, and a primary school literacy tutor.
Additionally, I have worked as a sessional lecturer at CCCU, teaching on undergraduate modules.
I am patient, friendly, and I always make sure that my lessons are fun and engaging as well as informative. I tailor my teaching approach according to each student's needs as every learning style is unique.
In the course of my ESL teaching, I also make sure that my students learn not just the language but also the relevant cultural background necessary for successful communication.

I approach each topic by assessing a student's individual needs and goals. I make use of a variety of teaching methods and multimedia techniques. I typically divide my lessons into writing/speaking/listening exercises, to make certain that the student has fully grasped the subject-matter by engaging with it.

Emily has been really great in working with my boys - they weren't keen on tutoring, but came away from their first lessons excited and happy to continue. She makes lessons fun and breaks down the material so it's easy to get the hang of and even engaging.
She's worked with them for a few years now, through from 11+ and 13+ , and my eldest is now off to his first-choice uni (to do an essay subject!!). She's helped them with their English language / grammar, essay writing, poetry essays (a big bugbear for both boys) and history. A few times, she's also helped them make sense of difficult assignments and the long A-levels history research essay.

I have a 24 hour cancellation policy. If cancelled within 24 hours of the lesson, the student will still be charged. However, if cancellation occurs prior to this, the student will not be charged.
