About Elliot
I am a retired Biology teacher, with many years of experience teaching groups and individuals. My knowledge remains up to date, as I have not lost interest in scientific advances, and still read the literature and attend seminars at Whitehead Institute. I am MA certified in Biology (5-8, 9-12), Chemistry (8-12) and Middle School Math/Science.

I try to focus as needed on the scientific and mathematical ideas, many of them counterintuitive, that students must master to make the content much easier to understand and digest. When there is mathematics involved, for instance, these clarifications can be very helpful; In chemistry, stoichiometry (predicting products of reactions) involves many conversions, and learning the simple sense of these instead of following rote programs turns out to be considerably less confusing. Younger students of physics have similar difficulties with word problems, where they stumble on the opaque nature of English sentences in their search for variables. Biology similarly has guiding concepts that help students make sense of the immense amount of content they are called to digest. I am also always alert to the different struggles different students have with learning these things, and helping students organize themselves for these tasks is always on my mind.
