About Kerstin
I taught special education to 6 to 14 year olds at a public school for 3 years. I also taught English learners how to read. My goal is to help people read in a painless and joyous way. Reading can feel torturous, but I hope to create a game like feeling while reading!

I start with an informal assessment to see what reading skills a student has and what their independent reading level is. My lessons focus on imagery in conjunction with foundational reading skills (phonics and word attack skills). These skills will then be applied to reading fluency of passages.
Since I taught special education, I have experience teaching foundational reading skills as well as evaluating student skills and progress. I also utilize Carol Dweck’s growth mindset theory when I teach, as confidence and positive self view correlate to educational achievement.
My style of teaching also recognizes that there is not a one style fits all approach, as everyone is different. Yes, there are set rules in the English language especially when it comes to reading, but it’s a teacher’s job to adapt.
