About Fiona

I am both a secondary school English teacher and a teacher of English as a Foreign Language, particularly Business English. I have been teaching for over 10 years and I've prepared students successfully for GCSE, IELTS and Trinity speaking exams. I am an AQA Examiner in English Language. I enjoy teaching one to one or in small groups, so that I can meet the individual needs of students. My approach to successful teaching is to ensure the comfort and happiness of students as a precursor to learning. People make the most progress when they are engaged and connected to what they are studying, and so I try to bring stories and language to life.

About the lesson

I start by finding out the needs of the student I am teaching, and then I devise a strategy to meet their needs. For example, if you need help to pass GCSE English Literature, I will talk to you about any texts you find particularly difficult and if you need support in structuring answers to meet the examiner's requirements. If you need to improve your Business English, I will ask you about your purpose and need for English. What are the areas you feel you need to practise? Functional and social English, writing emails, making presentations? Through ongoing reflection and discussion, I aim to support students to meet their needs in an enjoyable manner.

I have now taught Inga's daughter twice. She is in Year 8 and has a vivid imagination and natural enthusiasm for English. Together with Inga, we are working to develop a more structured approach to writing analytically and creatively. I am looking forward to seeing how her skills improve.

Perfect! We couldn’t recommend Fiona highly enough. She taught my daughter both English Literature and English Language, and she was absolutely brilliant.

Fiona is worth every penny. She really knows her subjects, the books and the exam boards inside out, so every lesson was focused and relevant. She doesn’t just teach the content; she also teaches valuable exam strategies and techniques, which really helped my daughter build confidence.

She sets homework, marks it before the next lesson and comes prepared, so you genuinely feel that you are getting excellent value for money and making the most of every session.

What really stood out was how well Fiona connected with my daughter. She made the lessons enjoyable and engaging, and my daughter genuinely enjoyed her sessions. She has had several tutors, and Fiona was by far her favourite.

Fiona is knowledgeable, encouraging, organised and really understands how to get the best out of the child she is teaching. In all honesty, part of me wants to keep her as my secret weapon because she is so good!
