"Plants are the lungs of the Earth, producing oxygen and purifying the air we breathe. Even common, uneducated citizens can recognize the importance of plants on Earth. However, as science students, we should understand the physiological processes behind this phenomenon. Photosynthesis Photosynthesis is the process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria convert light energy from the sun into chemical energy in the form of glucose. Where Does it Occur? Photosynthesis occurs in specialized organelles called chloroplasts, which are present in plant cells. Physiological Mechanism The physiological mechanism behind photosynthesis involves the absorption of light energy by pigments such as chlorophyll, which drives the conversion of carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen. This complex process involves two stages: the light-dependent reactions and the light-independent reactions (Calvin cycle). The Green is a Flaw: Plants appear green because the primary pigment, chlorophyll, absorbs the blue and red wavelengths of light very efficiently but reflects green light back to our eyes. In other words, they don't use the green light well. Oxygen is a Waste Product: The oxygen we breathe is actually a byproduct of the reaction where the plant splits water molecules. The plant keeps the hydrogen to make sugar and releases the oxygen as "trash."
