About Elsie

GCSE biology (as a single science or as part of combined science) can seem overwhelming. The sheer volume of definitions, processes and terms that students have to remember will likely put off many possible future scientists and doctors. As someone who has studied biology up to A-Level, I am well aware of how dull the subject can seem to be. However, it is best to see this subject at the GCSE level as a stepping stone on the path to greater things. In order to truly enjoy any subject, you must get this basic understanding and knowledge as a foundation. This acts as a home base, allowing you to delve into studying the natural world in all of its beauty and majesty.

I tutor in order to help others through this subject so that they may be able to learn and study biology independently and effectively. I want to spark a passion in science for others so that they may go on to study biological and medical sciences at university and beyond.

At GCSE level, I got a 9 in biology, as well as three other 9s, two other 8s, and 5 other 7s. I studied Biology, Chemistry and Maths at A-level, and I am predicted As in all of these subjects. I also got an A in my Level 3 Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) on climate change.

About the lesson

- I'll be giving 1-hour lessons targeted towards students in years 9-11 on both GCSE biology (both single biology and biology as part of combined science).

- We'll be using information from outside of the GCSE syllabus in order to explain key concepts and to help link biology to the other sciences.

- I'll also help show the real-world applications of biology in order to ignite enthusiasm and a willingness to research the subject beyond the bounds of the course.

- In order to best apply the knowledge, we'll be discussing the exam technique needed to get those high grades.

- We'll also be going over important revision strategies and resources so that the student is entirely prepared for any upcoming exams.

- During these lessons, the areas of biology tackled are the choice of the student rather than the tutor. This is so that the topics the students struggle with the most are tackled first to provide a full understanding of the entire syllabus.

- Homework is set depending on the needs of the student, so as to prevent the overworking of stressed pupils and to give the right push to the less enthusiastic towards learning.
