About Toneisha

As a PhD-trained neuroscientist and college biology lecturer at Spelman College, I bring both scientific expertise and hands-on teaching experience to every tutoring session. My background includes neuroscience research at The Ohio State University and Emory University, as well as developing course materials, designing assessments, and helping undergraduate students navigate challenging science concepts.

I am passionate about making science understandable, engaging, and approachable. I create a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, working through difficult problems, and building confidence in their abilities. My goal is not just to help students improve their grades, but to help them develop a deeper understanding of science and the skills to succeed independently.

Every student has different needs, so I tailor my approach to their goals, learning style, and course requirements. Whether we are reviewing biology fundamentals, preparing for an exam, or exploring neuroscience in greater depth, I bring patience, professionalism, and a commitment to helping each student make meaningful progress.

My approach to tutoring focuses on helping students understand the why behind scientific concepts rather than simply memorizing facts. As a neuroscientist with a PhD in Neuroscience from The Ohio State University and experience as a college biology lecturer at Spelman College, I understand that students learn in different ways. I tailor each session to the student's learning needs, course expectations, and academic goals.

I break down complex concepts into manageable steps and use real-world examples, diagrams, practice questions, and scientific figures to connect ideas and reinforce understanding. I encourage students to ask questions, explain concepts in their own words, and work through problems independently so they can build confidence and become more effective learners. My goal is for students to leave each lesson with a clearer understanding of the material, greater confidence, and strategies they can use independently.

I bring together scientific research experience and college-level teaching. My background as a neuroscientist allows me to connect classroom concepts to real scientific questions, current research, and practical applications. My teaching experience has also helped me develop ways to explain challenging material clearly and support students as they build their scientific reasoning skills.

Rather than simply giving students answers, I help them develop the tools to arrive at answers themselves. I emphasize critical thinking, problem-solving, interpreting figures and data, and understanding how scientific concepts connect. I aim to create a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and learning from them.

I work with high school and college students who want to strengthen their understanding of biology and related sciences. Lessons can be tailored to a student's course, current level, and specific goals.

Subjects include:

Biology: General biology, cell biology, and foundational biological concepts

College-level biology: Physiology, cellular processes, and related topics

Neuroscience: Neuronal communication, action potentials, synapses, neurotransmitters, brain anatomy, and sensory systems

Exam preparation: Reviewing challenging concepts, practicing application questions, and developing effective study strategies

Scientific literacy: Understanding scientific figures, interpreting data, and learning how to read and discuss research

Whether you are preparing for an upcoming exam, working through a challenging college science course, or hoping to deepen your understanding of neuroscience, I will tailor our sessions to your needs and help you build both knowledge and confidence.
