About Nafeesa

My name is Nafeesa Moosa. I am from South Africa and English is my first language.
I was a volunteer teaching assistant at an elementary school in Detroit Michigan from 1999 to 2004 and progressed to teaching reading in the Reading Program. Working with children who did not speak English as a first language ignited a passion in me to teach English as a second language.

Teaching children to read was exceptionally rewarding. The emphasis was not only on reading and comprehension but sounding out alphabets to form words. This unique method was a great success and made teaching a fulfilling journey for me.

I enjoy reading and I’d like to instill a love for reading and books in my students as this is the stepping stone to a world of knowledge, starting from your cereal box to escapism into your favorite fiction.

In my 6 years at Miller Elementary my initiative and ambition helped me accumulate knowledge about school and class management as well as the importance of considering cultural differences. Dearborn, a city in Detroit, is a multi-cultural area with a school of diverse pupils and teachers. I look forward to learning more about the diverse cultural backgrounds of my future students and integrating this knowledge into my lessons. My aim is to teach English to students who will learn to talk English.

My approach to my young students will be to create an environment that invites them to learn and be at ease.

In closing I would like to emphasize that teaching and learning are symbiotic. My students will be eager to learn if they know that their teacher is also eager to learn from and with them - an exchange of culture, language and knowledge.

About the lesson

As a TEFL trained teacher with previous experience, lessons in my on line class will be interesting and stimulating . My lessons are aimed at k to 3rd grade. English is my native language so with props, pictures and colorful books we will explore English. A typical lesson will be lively and fun as children absorb more when learning in a relaxed atmosphere. I am talkative and funny so we will laugh while we learn the ABC. There will be audiovisuals to enjoy and further broaden students' exposure to English. Reading and writing will consolidate what they learn. I am patient and will encourage my students to speak English with confidence.
