About Kelly
I started teaching in 2007 and have a Masters Degree in Education from National University. In 2017, I completed my post-graduate endorsement work in Special Education from the University of Montana and have worked as a special education teacher for the last 5 years honing my craft. I am dedicated to the teaching of reading to all people using the evidence based practices of the Science of Reading which align with Cognitive Science research about how the brain learns.

I specialize in teaching English language reading and writing to all people ages 3-adults who want strengthen their decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling) skills. I use a highly structured, explicit instruction approach based on the Science of Reading which is tailored the specific needs of each student. Lessons are 30-90 minutes long depending on age and attention span of student. Lessons include phonemic awareness warm up (oral word games), teaching the sound/spelling focus pattern, review of recent patterns, blending sounds into words using the focus pattern, encoding in isolation, encoding words by phonemes (mapping), encoding words in context (sentences or paragraphs), decoding passage, reading fluency routine, and finally reading/writing for meaning/comprehension.
