About Alex
Studying Veterinary Medicine at the University of Cambridge for the past three years has developed my passion for science and its application to animal health. Through a challenging preclinical course, I have developed a broadened knowledge base of the scientific field, which has helped to strengthen my understanding of topics that were taught at GCSE and A Level.
My degree has shown me how to apply science to the real world and I aim to teach this to my students and bring the topics to life.Discussing the subjects that I love is both enjoyable and enlightening to me, and I believe that energetic conversations allow for development of ideas in both parties. My excitement about how science impacts our day to day lives is what pushed me to learn even more, and I hope to instil this into my students.
Though my revision and learning approaches have allowed me to excel, I recognise that learning styles are different for everyone, and will adapt my approach to each individual student. Communication skills are a key quality for both a vet and a teacher, and I’m sure my students will benefit from the communication skill development that I have received at university.Having come from a school that offered minimal help to their students, I want to give students the leg up that I didn’t receive, in order to achieve their goals.

Lessons will be entirely focused on the need for the individual student. Starting with any topics that students have requested, I will prepare a short explanation on the topic. This will then be followed by any further questions that the student has, before moving onto some exam style questions.I believe that visual learning is a beneficial teaching tool and will use diagrams in explanations if necessary, which I have often used in my degree. Having completed numerous past papers myself when I was at school, I recognise the benefit of these and will use them to help test students understanding and progress in certain topics.
During my time at Cambridge, I have participated in numerous small group supervisions and have experienced first-hand what works and what doesn’t in a small group learning environment. Being scared to ask questions or intimidated is not beneficial, and I will encourage my students to ask ANY questions that they may have, without feeling embarrassed. I’m a friendly and chatty girl who has a desire to help my students in any way that I can.
Feedback is absolutely essential in teaching, and I will gladly receive any comments on my teaching style to try and cater to each individual student’s needs through adapting my methods.
