About Chris

Hi! My name is Chris Choi. I am a rising senior at Emory University with a major in Chemistry and a minor in English Literature. I am also a Biochemistry Teaching Assistant (TA) for this spring semester and the following fall semester. Out of school I work at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta as a clinical researcher.

Since I began college, I have accumulated a lot of experience as a tutor. During my sophomore year, I was a University Tutor for Organic and General Chemistry and guided struggling students towards excellent grades. The following year, I was an independent AP Chemistry tutor for three students. I created highly individualistic training and practice for the students according to their needs.

I don't have as much experience tutoring Calculus and Physics, but am confident in my ability to explain the courses' theories and concepts that is palatable for students.

As a tutor, my goal is to be available as my students need me to be. I understand the problems with having only one session per week, so I make it a priority to be available to my students when they need my help.

I began my time as a tutor at Emory University as an assigned tutor. I would hold sessions everyday of the week and students could come to my office if and when they needed my assistance.

I really liked this open format because it allows students to direct their learning by bringing questions they want answered.

If students require more directed assistance from me, I am prepared to do so as well.

I have over 200 hours of independent AP Chemistry tutoring and each of my students performed excellently on their AP exams as well as in their school curricula.

At Emory, I acted as a tutor for both Organic and General Chemistry courses for two semesters during my sophomore year.

Aside from tutoring, I also have experience as a Freshmen Seminar faciliator. Though I did not have to really "teach" anything academic, this opportunity taught me how to listen to and communicate with students in a respectful and enjoyable manner.

About the lesson

My first step is to have a free consultation with my students to understand what concepts they are struggling with. I then ask how they learn best, through practice, guided instruction, or a combination of both.

It takes time, but if a student is willing, I make an effort to get to know them as people. I like making analogies (sometimes corny ones, forgive me) for difficult concepts so my students can understand them in more familiar terms.

I want to be as available as I can for each student, but I do have a policy of requesting a session at least 24 hours beforehand. This will give me time to create a lesson plan for the student and be as prepared as possible for the session.

There is no limit to how many times we can meet in a week and I don't demand that weekly sessions be held.

My specialty is working with struggling students and bringing them up to pace. I mostly have experience working with these types of students because those doing well don't really seek out tutoring.

Students should seek tutors whose sessions are as fun as they are effective. I was a high school student before, too, and I know very well how boredom is the worst hurdle between a student and learning. Tutors should provide information, but in a way where the student will actually listen.

Though it's not really an event and it comes kind of as a result of the COVID-19 epidemic, I am happy to see that global carbon emissions are going down due to less use of transportation.

Had to grab at straws here...2020 hasn't been so great thus far.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I do want to help students, but it is not helpful for me just to do all the practice problems for them. I ask that students at least attempt problems before approaching me with questions so that we can focus on the most difficult areas together.

Due to COVID-19, I will not be doing face-to-face sessions, but rather through video-chat.

Since I am seeking to deliver highly personalized services that may not be available at your local Kumon facilities, I typically charge $30/Hour of tutoring.

If my rates cannot be afforded, I am open and flexible to negotiate prices.
