About Lori
This is the ONLY online color theory & paint mixing course of it's kind. The course offers content in short videos, and Lessons a drip-fed once a week. This is to ensure that all students are at the same point when we have our LIVE Q&A sessions every Thursday evening, via Zoom. All students are able to speak to me and each other, ask questions, offer tips, and review the previous week's Lesson. This is a speaking chat, not a typed chat. The student interacts by voice, either through their computer's microphone, or a headset.
There is also homework, beginning in Lesson 2. The student demonstrates their understanding of the concepts taught by doing various exercises based on the content of the Lesson. These are submitted to me, and I will then do a video critique of the exercise, and upload it to Dropbox, where it can be accessed by any student in the course. The critiques offer help, tips, tricks and a few extra nuggets of knowledge, so I encourage the students to also review the critiques of their fellow students.
The course is for life, so any addittions, changes, etc. are available to every student who has taken the course, no matter the date. All video Lessons are downloadable. There are also downloadable supplemental material, a transcript, and an audio file made available.
The class size is small, so interaction with me is more personal, and in-depth. I am also available via email.
In addition to the above, there is a Leaderboard for each session. Students can earn extra points by finding the "Golden Egg", in the form as an answer to a question, extra credit on exercises, and interaction. The student with the most points at the end of the course receives a $50.00 gift e-certificate to Dick Blick, providing there are (3), or more, students enrolled for that session.
This is a PRACTICAL color theory and mixing course, designed to help the student understand why pigments behave the way they do, and how to use those properties to their advantage, rather than trying to make it do what it's impossible for that pigment to do. In other words, how to choose the correct pigments to achive the color needed, resulting in less wasted paint, and less frustration.
The course necessarily contains some theory, but it it is designed to teach the practical aspect of mixing colors, and how/why certain pigments work better than others for specific mixes.
I've been an artist for over 25 years, and an instructor for 10 years. My art takes the form of highly detailed carved and painted birds, pastel pencil/colored pencil drawings, graphite drawings, and acrylic painting.
My accomplishments include:
1. Being contracted by Fox Chapel Publishing to write a book on my main art-for, birdcarving. The result was a 256 page how-to book, featuring (3) start to finish carving and painting projects, called "Carving Award-Winning Songbirds".
2. Being contracted by the same publisher to contribute paintings (27 in all) to a series of reference books for artists on birds of prey, written by Denny Rogers.
3. Numerous articles for Woodcarving Illustrated on painting and carving techniques, and a three issue project for Wildfowl Carving Magazine.
4. An episode of Woodsculpting on the DIY Channel on my work.
5. A segment on my art on "Outdoor Idaho", aired on Idaho Public TV.
6. Invitations to teach my art, and color theory class at various venues across the USA, and from my studio.
What truly gives me pleasure is when the student has that "ah-ha" moment, when things finally click into place. I love instructing because I can possibly save the student from the mistakes and lessons learned on my own; things I wish I'd have known when I was at a certain skill level. It's all about shortening the learning curve, and alleviating trepidation on approaching a project.
As a full-time artist, there are feast or famine times. Teaching my artform, and the course offered, Practical Color Theory and Mixing, are ways to fill in those gaps.
As a teacher and student of workshops, color "formulas" are given, with little or no explanation why those particular pigments were chosen. It isn't the fault of the instructors, but time restraints prevent explaining the reasons. In seminars, every student goes home with a finished project, so time is at a premium. I saw a niche, and decided to fill it. The course was originally taught from my studio, or by invitation by groups. Putting the course online saves the student the hassle and costs of travelling to me (and vice versa), and there's the added benefit of being able to take the time to explain the concepts one-to-one, if a student is having problems, without slowing the progress of the other students.
I've been a professional artist for over 25+ years, taught numerous workshops, written, or contributed to, 5 books, writtten numerous articles for magazines on painting, and how-to articles.

Since this is an online course, I send each new student an email containing all of the information they need to prepare for class - instructions for navigating the site, explaining the features, etc.
I work mainly with beginner and intermediate level students. The course is designed for these levels, however, I've had advanced skill level students, and they have said that they learned a few new things. It's all about taking each student to the next level in their progression of mastering painting.
There is no such thing as "wasted paint" when you are learning color mixing. The only way to understand pigments, is to to play with them in mixtures in order to understand their properties and limitations, and use these to your advantage. You can't make a pigment do what's it's physically impossible for it to do, and my assigned exercises help reinforce these concepts, and provides the student with hands-on knowledge of how their chosen brand(s) of paint behaves.
One of my recent students won Best in World , Miniatures, in the Ward World Wildfowl Carving Championships. It's gratifying to know the course played a role in this artist's winning sculpture.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
There really aren't many questions, other than "How do I mix the color I want, instead of mud?" This course isn't a course about techniques, but rather, a course about paint properties, their advantages and limitations, and at the end of the course, the student will have the confidence to make informed choices of which pigments to choose for a specific mix, and the why behind those choices.

This course was well worth the investment. I knew really very little about pigments, purchasing or mixing, when I started but now I have a new confidence. In the past if it said paint something green, I went out and tried to purchase the green the closest to what was being called for. Now I have the confidence to make my own colors. Am I an expert? Hell no, but I have something to build on. And I will not waste so much money on paints which I will use once or twice. Great course!!

The Color Theory Rocks online course I offered by Whispering Eagle Studio was top notch. Well structured, packed full of information, meaningful homework with personalized critique. I'm a retired teacher and know good teaching when I experience it. THIS WAS GOOD TEACHING!
Grueling, but thorough practice sessions gave me a real understanding of practical mixing techniques. Lori's feedback allowed me to grow my ability and confidence to mix colors that pop as well as blend for backgrounds and transitions. I am no longer intimidated when attempting to mix a particular color, shade or tone.
