About Doug
Before I was hired as a writing tutor, I had the opportunity to take a class on pedagogy (theories and techniques of teaching). I learned then what makes a successful tutorial and consulting session. I hope to take those skills I used then as a writing tutor forward into my tutoring sessions now.
I enjoyed organizing study groups and sharing the learning process with others in college. Those skills of helping others to understand, and receiving that same help, are part of my career as a researcher to this day.
I like to think that my career is set up as a tutor to others, and a tutee of others. I believe I can support effective learning because it is a part of my daily life, and my lifelong passion to learn.
I knew in college that I wanted to be a researcher after I presented at a conference. I really felt like I was "supposed" to be a scientist then. Starting this August (2021) I'm joining the Psychology Department at Virginia Tech for my Ph.D. I want to focus my research and the application of that research toward learning and education.
Learning and teaching are and will continue to be a fundamental part of my career and passion. So, tutoring is more than a side gig to me; it is part of my larger vision and something I am committed to improving.

Details
I like to have a consultation session before we begin, to set goals for the tutoring session, identify strengths and areas for improvement, and discuss the context for learning.
My pricing system is based on the hour and changes proportionally based on the duration of the session. For example, one half-hour session is half my hourly rate where a two-hour session is two times the hourly rate.
My preferred method of payment is PayPal. I send invoices through the system and payment with a credit/debit card is available. My standard policy is weekly payment, but I could be flexible depending on your circumstances. I will most likely terminate the contract if payment has not been received for one month.
