About Christina

I’ve been teaching English literature since 2006. When I was in school, I was in gifted and advanced placement classes. At uni, I had a dual major in theater and English literature. I’ve got a Masters degree in Adolescent English Language Arts Education. For the last year, I’ve tutored Chinese students online in the English language including speaking, grammar, reading, and writing.

I combine literature, music, film, and my students’ interest to create unique lessons rooted in the same educational goals. It’s in this way that I can reach all students and help them gain an appreciation and love of English literature. Education and English is my passion.

I’ve loved English literature and writing my entire life. After college, I worked as a special education substitute in an all inclusive classroom. I would also help the other children. I discovered that I thoroughly enjoyed teaching the children and had a knack for education. I felt that it was my calling. As a result, I decided that I would go to graduate school and earn a Masters in Education. I loved the program and I love being a teacher.

When a meet my student for the first time, I get to know them as a person. We talk about music, movies, what interests they have. We laugh! I ask them about their reading preferences and make suggestions. I assure them that no matter what part of English they are uneasy with, I’ll make our lessons fun and include what they love. I’ll also ask what they want to work on to improve and give them a short but concise activity so I can see their skill level.

I’ve worked with all kinds of students: mainstream, special education, students with reading learning disabilities, English Language learners, elementary, middle, and high school students. I enjoy teaching them all.

Meet your prospective teacher for a trial lesson. You want to make sure that you like your teacher and that you both click. Part of that is assessing if you feel comfortable with and have confidence in your teacher. Don’t be afraid to look for another teacher if that one doesn’t fit.

I was recently volunteering in my son’s kindergarten classroom. The children were each writing their own story. They’d draw the pictures. Their teacher and I wrote down their stories as they told them to us. I was amazed and delighted at their imaginations and excitement about the assignment. It reinforced why I teach: to share in their excitement and wonder at the world.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should make a list of their strengths and weaknesses in English. They also need to write down what they want to get out of the tutoring. They need to make a goal for themselves that they can share with their teacher so the teacher can gear lessons toward that end. Also, the students should tell their  teacher what they are interested in and like in English and in their world such as movies, music, social media, pop culture, other subjects, etc. The teacher can use this knowledge to make lessons that the students can really connect to that also support their English goals.
