About Ares
My passion for teaching reading comprehension and writing mastery is grounded in fostering critical thinking skills and creativity whether the student is focusing on analytical essays, creative writing, business writing, or otherwise. While my approach to teaching the English language incorporates important grammatical and structural concepts, I believe that moving beyond pure mechanics into novel idea-building is attainable for all students.
As a reading and writing tutor, my first priority is to help each student understand and hone their unique perspectives and voices. Not only does this approach improve the quality of the students' writing, but it also builds confidence in the students' abilities and makes reading and writing more enjoyable.
My teaching experience includes working as an English composition teaching assistant at Ohio State University where I collaborated in creating and delivering lesson plans and assisted in grading essays and projects.
I have also worked as a freelance editor for published writers, earning acknowledgments in upcoming publications by Stephanie Cronenberg of Rutgers University and Joshua T. Anderson of University of Saint Joseph among others.
My specialties are essays, poetry, short stories, and analytical writing. I am also familiar with business writing and online content writing through my outreach and organizing work with nonprofits such as Neighborhood Services Inc. in Columbus OH and Conscious Connections Inc. in Wilmington DE.
I've received my education in English literature, sociology, and ecology from Ohio State University and the University of Delaware.
I have experience teaching as both a nanny and a teaching assistant. In both roles I was tasked with collaborating on lesson plans and providing support in delivering those plans. I often provided one-on-one support to students in these roles and offered substantive feedback in the grading process.
I also have experience as a freelance editor sharing my expertise with academics in the field of education and literature. My editing and design contributions have been acknowledged in upcoming publications by Stephanie Cronenberg of Rutgers University and Joshua T. Anderson of University of Saint Joseph.

When meeting a new student, I will schedule a time to talk about the person's needs and background. During this time we will create a list of goals which we can refer back to during our time together. I will also ask that the student share any relevant coursework during this time. This will allow me to craft lesson plans, exercises, and/or assignments accordingly.
I have worked with students of all ages but am most familiar with students middle school age and older. My interdiscipinary and intercultural approach works well with students of any background.
I would advise that a student read each potential teacher's bio carefully. Although it can be tempting, don't just pick a teaching based on convenience/price/location. Although those elements are important, you should make sure the teacher can actually provide what you need. Perhaps a teacher you're considering has proper credentials and experience in one particular area but their specialties don't address your needs.
Read or ask about a teacher's approach and specialities and make sure they align with your educational goals.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Consider both your objective goals (such as: "I want to get at least a B in my English composition class") as well as your subjective goals (such as: "I want to feel less anxious about writing a big essay"). This will help teachers get to know the real you and assess whether the tutor-student relationship is a good fit.
