About Chris

- developing better writers for long term success -

I'm an educator from Virginia, USA with 5+ years designing and implementing effective educational programs! I received my B.A. in English and Women's Studies from James Madison University (JMU) in 2017 and am currently a Master of Education candidate working on a degree in Educational Administration with a counseling focus.

Previously employed as a writing tutor for JMU, I have been helping students develop their strengths as writers since 2015. Explaining the rules of grammar and sentence construction, planning and organizing essays, analyzing dense literary texts - you name it and I've done it!

My counseling focus and passion for multicultural competence make me an ideal fit for students who feel they are lacking the empathetic connection with their in-class instructors. I'm sensitive to exceptional learning needs, versed in the principles of universal design, and believe that the most impactful writing we do puts our lived experiences on the page.

Beyond my English tutoring skills, I have presented at local, national, and international conferences on the subjects of LGBTQ+ literature, higher education program development, curriculum design, and higher education assessment. I assisted the development of JMUs English B.A. curriculum for "diversity, identity, and power" using an intersectional lens. I'm a runner, dog lover, and Washington Capitals fan.

I'm excited to hear how my expertise can support you or your student as they reach their fullest potential as a writer!

One of my top values is connection. At my most fulfilled I find myself working with and for students to help them achieve their goals; I love hearing people's stories and supporting them as they live their most authentic lives. As much as I truly enjoy writing and crafting essays, I think what keeps me coming back to this work is seeing the joy a student gets from successfully sharing their story on the page. I love being able to witness someone harnessing the power of their voice.

About the lesson

I like to conduct an "intake appointment" first, especially for a long term client. This is a time for us to get to know one another and for me to hear some of the general anxieties or struggles they are facing as a writer.

I'll use a skills inventory measure so the client can rate their current confidence levels on a variety of subjects. We'll revisit this tool at multiple points working together so that I can see if we are improving in the ways they hope; this keeps me accountable and helps us identify successes!
