About Andrea
I don't expect students to conform to my teaching style. I prefer tutoring small groups or individuals to a traditional classroom because I can tailor my teaching methods to how each student learns best.
As clichéd as it may sound, I live for the moment when a student acheives their "aha" epiphany. When their empathy shines through while discussing the decisions of George and Lenny. When they realize the horrors of their own country's past through the plight of Tom Robinson. When a simple mneumonic excites them because it helps them remember a grammar rule or a word's spelling that they struggled with for years. When writing a journal entry or narrative piece or poem helps them process their emotions from a difficult time. Once that passion has been unlocked, their opportunities are limitless. It's an incredibly rewarding thing to witness.
In 2008, I began my educator's journey by tutoring fouth-grade children in math through Green River College. Since 2015, I have been virtually educating students non-stop, via tutoring or teaching. Throughout those years, I've tutored elementary-aged students in English/language arts and math, completed my Master of Arts in Teaching degree (English, grades 5-12) from Western Governor's University, taught English to high school students, and worked as a guest teacher in many subjects from grades 5-12 in four school districts.
Until COVID-19 allows Washington State schools to re-open, I will be hanging up my guest-teaching lanyards and tutoring students instead. You can learn more about my experience at my LinkedIn profile here: (concealed information)

When starting out with a new student, I like to get to know them first -- not just what they think about a certain school subject, but who they are as a person. If they are a sports fan, an animal lover, a passionate hunter, a whiz in the kitchen, I'll work to incorporate that knowledge into my lessons to help engage them.
Then I like to get a snapshot of their past with the subject we're working on. If they happen to claim they're "not good" at English, or that they don't like it based on past experiences, I'll bear these things in mind in my approach.

Andrea did her student teaching with me several years ago at Enumclaw High School. She primarily taught my ninth-grade students. Her lessons showed a deep understanding of the content and she gained many strategies to help students of all levels meet their learning targets. She is kind and thoughtful and always has the best interest of her students in mind. Additionally, Andrea is a regular substitute for numerous English teachers in our building and students enjoy having her in the classroom.
