About Maryn

I myself took private lessons in drawing and painting starting at age 12 until my senior year of high school. As a current university student studying Fine Art and Illustration, I believe in lifelong learning and finding ways to constantly improve.

Since I am also a student, I see various ways teachers communicate with students and how they adapt to the needs of different individuals. I recognize that not everyone learns the same way, and I work with students to discover what works best for them, and what I can do to make their learning process as meaningful as possible.

I also cater lessons to each student, helping them imporove on the art they want to make and find their own style and voice.

Gilbert Visual Arts League Student Award- 1st place

Work Displayed in Shemer Arts Center (Scottsdale) and Phoenix Art Museum

Art, specifically painting, has been my lifelong passion, so much so that I’m committed to it both as a career and as a hobby.

I believe that learning to see the world and interpreting it in an artistic form allows one to connect on a deeper level with the world and the people around them. Art has made me a better, more empathetic person, in that I’m always trying to understand something beyond what lies on the surface.

I have had a few one on one lessons with friends, as well as a previous job that allowed me to teach monthly group art lessons. I love the opportunity to help others be more creative and make something they can be proud of. Seeing the spark of creativity being lit inside someone is so special, and that motivates me to help others on their creative journey.

Current student at BYU Studying Illustration (which program includes intense study of classical technique and mediums).

Private art lessons in charcoal and ink drawing, as well as rigorous training in oil painting.

Extensive knowledge of oil, acrylic, ink, charcoal, pencil, and digital mediums.

About the lesson

The first order of business is learning what my student is interested in. It’s important to build connection and trust, as well as discovering what kind of art they’re interested in.

Second, I look at their current work as well as their previous experience or knowledge and use that as a foundation to build upon, meeting the student as they are.

Next, I work with the student to make an individual course plan based on their interests and skill level, selecting specific projects and goals to work on to build their skill and portfolio.

I have worked with students ranging from 15 to 50, all at beginning levels. I typically don’t work with students younger than 11, because studying art requires a high level of attention, focus, and observation skills.

Art is very subjective, and everyone experiences it and talks about it in a different way. Two people can explain the same concept to you, but it may “click” with one, and not the other.

There is trial and error, but the most important thing is that you find a teacher who will respect your style and help you grown on your own creative journey.

Details

Generally $25 per hour of lesson, or $40 for a 2 hour lesson. Art lessons typically require more time than others due to the need for setup and cleanup, as well as adequate time to get “into the zone”.
