About Steven
I am dedicated to the student that wants to pursue the medium of watercolors or learn how to draw from life or imagination. Watercolors can be complicated and drawing accurately from life takes time. These lessons are designed to be comprehensive and practical and will save a student years of time understanding fundamentals.

I enjoy painting and drawing and living the life of an outdoor naturalist painter as well as creating abstractions and surrealistic worlds. I have been exhibiting my watercolor illustrations in galleries, cafes and summer festivals over the past 25 years. But, when it comes to teaching Watercolor Magic or Drawing Camp, I get excited about the amount of difference I can make. I love it when students "Get It", and realize that they can create rivers, control saturation levels, develop a value and color range or just render a still life with accurate proportions and detail. The great thing about art and the artist is that is doesn't matter what subject is being painted, the style of the artist will always show through. This is just one of many things that make being an artist personally rewarding.
In 2014, I began teaching beginner watercolor classes out of my art gallery concert venue The Phoenix Cafe in Hazel Park, MI. Over the years I would have workshops at art supply stores and public libraries. But in 2018, I went abroad again with a 5 session course of beginner watercolor classes and taught several sessions of that with 8-12 students at a time. I love seeing people get excited over the magic and positive results.
In the mid 90's after a year of studio art at MSU, I attended Lansing Community College and took four semesters of Watercolors. Figure drawing classes also were part of the curriculum in these college years and after. My upbringing of drawing at a young age and my passion for watercolors allowed for a large portfolio to develop and exhibit for the following 25 years. My art friends and I have been running a non-instructed figure drawing class since 2013, and in 2014 I began teaching watercolors.

I talk about why I am so passionate about watercolors and then have them share why they are interested in the medium and creating art in general. Then we go over the supplies and techniques that deal specifically with the following exercise. Then students tape down their paper, sketch the subject, create washes and paint. I do not do art during the class so that I can assist students as they make decisions. Following rules gives you the power to amend and alter the rules, therefore gaining control of the composition and exhibiting one's own personal style and exhuberance.
