About Violeta

Hello fellow artist! My name is Violeta Encarnacion and I am an Illustrator. I have attended art school for the past eight years and I am currently a Junior at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan New York City. I would love to share the tips and tricks that I have learned in painting, drawing, and illustration with you! My goal is to teach and inspire enough that the creativity in your mind will match the work your hands produce. A common struggle is to make work that truthfully illustrates the idea, and with my course, I intend to help you with the technical aspect of art-making, without compromising creativity. I wish to train your hands and eyes to produce beautiful work, but to also aid in the making of a portfolio to apply to magnet schools, universities, internships and more. Upon meeting the student, and in accordance with their level, the course intensity and pace will vary, providing a personalized experience. I will also direct our focus to artists and styles that interest you. This means that the work will be meaningful to you and not just something made for the sake of impressing a few, although there will be much to be said about your skills in the work. I love experimenting with media and subject matter. I try to make work that makes me laugh or feel good, not things merely to fit into today's market. I have worked with fashion illustrations, garment creation, sculpture, animation, printmaking, and more. Therefore, in my course there will be plenty of play, but with intention. Every student will have different goals and separate paths must be taken to reach them. Every class will have a flow and tasks fully catered to you. In my work, my goal is to inspire a conversation between the viewer and the piece, that remains to dwell within them after they walk away. Because of the variety in the pieces I make, I have a lot of experience with freelancing and self-promotion which can be useful to some of my older students as well. I love teaching art because I find that even if you wish to explore it as a hobby, it does so much for a person's soul, and I truly enjoy seeing how every individual, no matter the age, opens up through artmaking. Being a working artist and an instructor also allows me what I wish I had known when I started out as a little girl full of dreams and I intend to share as much of that with my students as I can. I also have a younger brother and over eight cousins so I know my way around with the rising generation of artists.

My father is an artist and from a young age, I had the privilege of learning from him. Throughout my teenage years, I went to a few art organizations and classes. I also attended the Design and Architecture Senior High School where I studied fashion design, illustration, and fine arts. Then, since the year 2018, I have been enrolled in the School of Visual Arts where I am working on a BFA in Illustration.

About the lesson

The first thing I like to do is ask them to tell me what their overall goals are for our class i.e making a portfolio to apply to colleges, improving their skills, or just gaining confidence when using a specific medium. I also ask them to give me the name of three or more artists they look up to in order to see what direction they are leaning towards. Finally, I like for them to let me know what their favorite mediums to work in are. These all help me understand best what the student's needs are and how I can help them. These can be simplified or expanded on, depending on the age and level of the student. No pressure though! Chances are, that by the time we are deep into the class, a few of your initial answers and goals will have grown and evolved into similar, but new ones nonetheless.

I have worked with students that range from the ages of five years old, all the way to thirty-year-olds wanting to try something new and creative.
