About Sarah

I have years of experience fine-tuning my painting process, and I'm also a great teacher! I believe that understanding the technical side of painting helps us be our most creative selves. You can see my work at (concealed information) on Instagram @sarahhoulearts, or on Netflix's 'The Woman in The House Across The Street from The Girl in The Window'.

I specialize in working with adults who want their explore their creativity through painting. I focus on the specifics of the creative process, in additional to technical paintings skills. I give my students practical tools to start and make their own work, so that they can make things even when feeling 'stuck'. I am also a color specialist; I have lots of color exercises that help my students understand and use color!

I started giving tours at Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art in 2007. I was also a teaching assistant at Marwen, an arts-focused after school program, at the same time.

I have a Bachelor's of Fine Arts in Painting, from Washington University in St. Louis (2005).

About the lesson

I give each of my new students a short list of questions before their first class. This helps both of us get clear on what the student wants to learn. During the first class, we go over their answers, and start to dig into relevant material from there!0

Some dedicated children, but primarily adults. Typically, adults with some creative background, but who are newer to painting. No experience is necessary! I'm really good at working with newcomers.

Find someone whose work you love! It is also important to feel an easy connection to the teacher themselves. If you love their work, and enjoy them as a person, it will be enjoyable and inspiring to learn from them.

I love salsa dancing outside! It's my absolute favorite activity. My dance teachers just hosted an awesome outdoor event. We danced, listen to music, and made tacos from scratch.
