About Ruth

Hey there - my services stand out because I believe in giving the student what they want to learn: if you don’t want to learn to draw, you can skip it, by tracing your subject. If you don’t want to mix paints, you can buy some pre-mixed paints.

Learning is not linear, you can follow a guide, and be flexible around it.

i also believe in ways to improve your drawing quickly by using plexiglass to trace your subject then to check your work, this will expedite your ability to train your eye muscles to see minuscule errors.

I like to have fun with teaching.

I enjoy seeing a student succeed in making something.

I gain tremendous pleasure in someone becoming the artist they want to be.

In 1999 I trained to learn how to teach at Mission Renaissance Art Studios while learning and increasing my skills.

I continued to teach as a mobile teacher, in various studios and in my home over the years.

In 2012 I wanted to become an excellent artist, so I got my MFA. I’ve also taken workshops at Klein Academy studios in Los Angleles and with Edward Minoff.

I believe anyone can paint and draw, and with the right instructions you can do it really well.

About the lesson

Talk about the students goals, then we can start a lesson right away in any medium, within 15 minutes a painting or drawing situation can begin.

Then I teach step by step using demonstrations next to the student. The student executes the work. The student finishes on a high point and the work is assessesed.

We work in blocks of 50 minutes which includes demonstration and execution, then 15 minutes of a break. This is ideal for retaining information and keeping focus.

Students have ranged from age 5 to into their 80s.

Ive had students with autism, and some with ataxia, and I’ve had extremely driven students and very laid back students.

Some students stayed with me for years.

Tell me your goals, I can guide you with specific steps to gain results. Understand that you can set your goals, I am not teaching you in an academic setting where a specific order of learning much be achieved to move to the next step. But, if you skip steps (such as skipping basic drawing to move to painting) some frustration may ensue.

Enjoy it, trust yourself and tell your teacher if something doesn’t work for you. Drawing and painting requires mental and physical development and with time you can do it.

A recent event I am fond of in life was taking our puppy to walk by the ocean.

Another one was having my kids voluntarily do all of the laundry!
