About Elizabeth

I have a passion for art and education. My greatest reward is when a student learns a new skill or sees improvement in their work.

I have worked with students of all ages, from Pre-K to high school seniors. I am an experienced art teacher with 22 years in the public school system. After retiring, I am offering private lessons.

I am skilled in a variety of drawing media, acrylic paint an oil paints and had my first showing in 1990 at the Orando Art Museum. I am also a current and active member of the The First Coast Plein Air Painters

I graduated from UNF in 1997 and began teaching at Highlands Elementary School as a full time art teacher. During my time with the Duval County School system I worked with all grade levels and sponsored after school art programs as well.

Being an active member of the art community, I am also friends with artists in a variety of fields (fashion, animation, graphic design, advertising, etc) that I often call on for talks with my students. I am also a member of First Coast Plein Air Painters. In this group, I meet with other artists to discuss techniques, places to paint, and participate in community events/fundraisers for non profit organizations.

About the lesson

The first step is to have a student complete a simple still life so that I can asses their skill level. I also talk to the students to find out what they know and understand about drawing/painting tools and vocabulary. Most imporantly, I talk to my students to find out what they want to learn, the subject matter they want to work with and what their goals are.

I have taught drawing and painting in the public school system for 22 years. As such, I know how to create a series of lessons tailored to the needs of my students so that their creativity will thrive. This includes virtual and actual visits to museums and galleries, drawing on location, shopping with the student for art supplies to hep them understand how to find the good quality materials.

When you're looking for an instructor, view their portfolio. The work that they display should show a high skill level and with excellent craftsmanship. Check for positive and negative reviews and interview the instructor. Ask them what a typical lesson would consist of.

One of my favorite things about teaching was when I was working with my AP students. I had asked them what areas of art they had considered as a career and one was within the realm of fashion. I arranged a live chat with a former student who is a successful fashion and textile designer. One of my students was a huge fan of project runway so I didn't tell her that my former student was one of the contestants. She got so excited when she saw him pop up on the screen she started clapping. The kids asked some very thoughtful questions and my student was kind enough to answer them all.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Questions should revolve around the instructors education and qualifications. Is the instructor active in the art community? What have they recently worked on? How would they define art and it's purpose? What would an average lesson consist of?

Details

My average price is $20 an hour. I can purchase supplies for the students with the expectation of full reimbursement (receipt is given to student or parent/gaurdian). The cost for lessons increases if I need to travel further than 40 miles (depended on the extra distance). A $5 fee is added if I take the student (under 18) to a location. The student is responsible for any entrance fees/food/snacks/souveniers. Parents are welcome to travel with us.
