About Jennifer

Hi! My name is Jenny. I'm a 2nd year PhD student in the MIT Biology Department where I study gene expression in cyanobacteria. These photosynthetic prokaryotes are responsible for the Great Oxidation Event that transformed Earth's atmosphere into the oxygen-rich one capable of sustaining multicellular life--you and every person you've ever known and loved can exist because of the amazing chemistry these little creatures learned to do in primordial oceans several billion years ago. I think notions like this are what I love about biology... the beauty in randomness expressed on living systems, how to reconstruct that history of life and predict its outcomes in the future. I'm interested in how these little creatures might be harnessed to fix carbon to help mitigate atmospheric warming and in the process make useful compounds for humanity. I hope to help you see the beauty in biology and being able to speak the language of living systems, which not only helps you understand the world you inhabit but also the deep, complex processes happening inside of you.

I fell in love with science as a language--through biology and biological research, we get to essentially have a conversation with nature, asking her how something happens and recording her responses with all the amazing instruments at our disposal. I also love working with students to help them develop the "grammar" needed to access all of this knowledge and beauty.

I have a BA in Molecular Biology and have completed two years in the Biology PhD program at MIT. I have served as a teaching assistant in multiple undergrad courses both at my undergraduate (Wesleyan University) and for introductory biology at MIT. The MIT course was administered last fall entirely virtually, so I have experience in the virtual format. I also spent a year teaching biology at a high school in Spain through the Auxiliares de Conversación program where I also served as a private English tutor for elementary and high school students.

About the lesson

I like to get to know the learning style of my students as well as their goals, concept areas of strength and weakness, whether the student has an end objective, etc. Then, I like to jump right in with the first session and draft a plan afterward to help them reach their end goal.

Last night an aquaintance from college wrote to me that they always wished we had gotten to know each other better and that they wanted to be my friend. Life is quite isolating these days so that felt pretty awesome!
