About Jessica

I am in my 8th year of teaching high school science in Austin, TX. I have taught biology, anatomy and physiology, AP environmental science, and am teaching freshman-level environmental science this year. I love teaching and really enjoy working with my students to help them understand how our bodies/environments/world works!

I am certified to teach all sciences, though I prefer to stick to life sciences. I received my BA in Biology from Texas State University in 2005 and have a MA in Secondary Education from Texas State University, 2013.

With a BA in biology, my path naturally lead me to teach.

I have a degree in biology and am an experienced high school science teacher.

About the lesson

When tutoring a student, I need to know the content or skill that the student is trying to master ahead of time so that I can be prepared for our lesson. I will use a variety of strategies to go over the topic - digital whiteboard, videos, conversations, questioning, etc.

I have been at the same urban school for 8 years.

Make sure that you know what you want. Do you want someone to lecture you for an hour? Do you want someone that is going to require you to engage and interact with them the entire tutoring session (hopefully, yes!) There are many methods of teaching and learning and you want to make sure that your tutor and you have methods that align.

I am developing the Modules (Units) that the district pushes out for all Environmental Systems teachers to use. I have been contacted by teachers who are using in to thank me for saving them time and stress. My students also seem to love the structure and procedure or working through the material.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Ask yourself, "What am I struggling with right now in this class and why?" Are you having a hard time understanding a concept like photosynthesis? There are many reasons why this can be a difficult topic for a student to master. Some students struggle with the formula while others struggle with the general concept. Identifying what you are struggling with can help your tutor target that issue.
