About Edmund

There was a time I actively dreaded maths and physics lessons. My teacher rushed through topics, dismissed questions as "obvious," and made me feel stupid for not instantly understanding things that, looking back, weren't intuitive at all. By the time I reached my GCSEs, I'd convinced myself I simply "wasn't a maths person" — a belief that nearly shaped the rest of my education.

What changed everything was one teacher who actually took the time to explain things properly. She didn't move on until a concept genuinely made sense, and she never made me feel silly for asking basic questions. Within months, the subjects I'd hated became the ones I looked forward to most. That experience taught me something I've never forgotten: nobody is born hating a subject — bad teaching creates that feeling, and good teaching can undo it.

That's exactly why I tutor the way I do. I know what it's like to sit in a lesson feeling lost, embarrassed, and too afraid to ask for help. I also know how transformative it is when someone finally explains things in a way that clicks. Every lesson I teach is built around that principle: no question is too small, no student is "bad" at the subject, and understanding always comes before exam technique.

Today, physics and maths aren't just subjects I once struggled with — they're what I study every day as an undergraduate at the University of Oxford. Between problem sheets, tutorials, and long nights working through proofs in the library, I've come to love the way these subjects force you to think clearly, creatively, and rigorously. I bring that same energy into every tutoring session, alongside the discipline and structure that comes from studying at one of the most demanding universities in the world.

I take tutoring seriously, as a genuine responsibility rather than a side project. I prepare properly for every lesson, track each student's progress, and adapt my approach to how they learn best. My own journey — from failing and fearing these subjects to genuinely loving them — is exactly why I'm so committed to helping other students get there too.

About the lesson

Teaching methodology

I believe real progress starts with genuinely understanding a concept, not memorising it. So in every lesson, we start by breaking a topic down to its core logic — using analogies, real-world examples, and visual explanations until it actually clicks. For example, I'll compare circuit analysis to water flowing through pipes, or use everyday scenarios to explain moles and reaction rates in chemistry. Once a concept is solid, we shift into exam technique: working through past papers, dissecting mark schemes line by line, and picking apart the exact phrasing examiners look for. I keep a bank of common mistakes I've seen students make on specific topics, so we can pre-empt them before they cost marks. My style is relaxed and encouraging — I want students to feel comfortable asking "stupid" questions, because those are usually the ones that unlock everything else.

Lesson length

Sessions are flexible, typically ranging from 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on the topic and the student's needs. Shorter sessions work well for focused revision or tackling a specific weak spot, while longer sessions suit new, more complex topics or full past-paper walkthroughs where we need time to really dig in without feeling rushed.

Qualifications & experience

I achieved straight 9s across my GCSEs and A*s at A-Level in Physics and Maths, and I'm currently an undergraduate at the University of Oxford. Beyond my own results, I've spent time tutoring students one-to-one and in small groups, helping them move from feeling lost or anxious about exams to walking in with confidence and a clear strategy. I understand both the GCSE and A-Level specifications inside out, including exactly what examiners reward, because I've been through the process myself recently enough to remember what actually helps.

Who my lessons are for

I tutor GCSE students (typically ages 14–16) in Chemistry, Physics, and Maths, as well as A-Level students (ages 16–18) in Physics and Maths. My lessons suit students at every level — from those who need to build confidence and close gaps in understanding, to high achievers aiming for the top grades who want to sharpen their exam technique and tackle the trickiest exam-style questions.
