About Harrie Montgomery

I am an experienced secondary school teacher and private tutor with 10 years of tutoring experience and five years of professional classroom teaching. I hold a degree in Theology from Heythrop College and a Master’s degree in Classics from University College London (UCL). I have taught in a variety of educational settings, including secondary schools in London, universities in Rome, and, for the past four years, a CIS certified IB international school, where I teach English, Religion, and Philosophy, including English at IB level.

At the heart of my teaching is a deep passion for helping students achieve their academic goals. One of my main motivations in developing my intensive method for improving student writing has been the personal satisfaction I gain from seeing students make genuine and measurable progress. There are few things I find more rewarding than watching a student who previously struggled with essay writing develop the confidence and skills to produce work of which they can be genuinely proud.

About the lesson

I have 10 years of experience as a private tutor and five years of experience as a secondary school teacher. Although I teach a wide range of subjects, one of my particular areas of expertise is **intensive essay writing**.

Over the years, I have developed a set of tools that break down the essay-writing process in a highly granular and systematic way, allowing students to understand exactly what they need to do, when they need to do it, and why. I think of excellent essay writing almost as a form of **text prediction**: when a student reaches one word, sentence, or stage of an argument, they should have a clear understanding of what needs to come next in order to develop the argument, impress the reader, and meet the criteria for the highest grades.

I have been extremely successful in using this approach to improve student outcomes, both in my classroom and in one-to-one tuition. Rather than simply correcting an essay after it has been written, I teach students a repeatable method that they can apply independently under examination conditions.

This approach is intensive and requires considerable work from both teacher and student, but it is extremely effective. The higher price of these sessions reflects the level of individual attention involved and, more importantly, access to a structured method that has been tested and refined through years of classroom teaching and private tuition and has proven successful time and time again.
