  • 1).When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in biology developed during high school, particularly when I was introduced to molecular biology and genetics. Understanding the intricate mechanisms governing life fascinated me, and I found myself delving deeper into research papers beyond the standard curriculum. My passion for tutoring emerged during university when I began assisting my peers with challenging topics such as cellular respiration and genetic inheritance. The satisfaction of helping someone grasp a difficult concept motivated me to pursue tutoring more seriously.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I specialize in biology, covering topics from cellular and molecular biology to ecology and human physiology. I particularly enjoy discussing genetics, evolutionary biology, and neurobiology, as these fields continuously evolve with groundbreaking research. For instance, CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing technology is a revolutionary topic that excites both students and researchers alike. On the other hand, while I recognize the importance of taxonomy and plant physiology, I find them more challenging to make engaging for students. However, I strive to present these topics in an applied manner, such as linking plant physiology to agricultural advancements and food security.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, one of my greatest influences was my high school biology teacher, who had an exceptional ability to simplify complex topics using real-world analogies. She once compared enzyme-substrate interactions to a key fitting into a lock, making the concept of specificity in biochemical reactions much clearer. This approach inspired me to use relatable analogies in my teaching. Additionally, scientists like Richard Dawkins and Barbara McClintock have influenced my perspective on genetics and evolutionary biology, reinforcing my love for the subject.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A successful tutor must possess patience, adaptability, and clarity in communication. Biology encompasses abstract and intricate concepts, so a tutor must break down information into digestible segments. For example, explaining DNA replication requires visual aids and stepwise simplifications. Moreover, adaptability is crucial, as each student has a unique learning style-some may benefit from diagrams, while others require mnemonic devices or hands-on experiments. Lastly, fostering critical thinking is essential; rather than rote memorization, I encourage students to analyze biological phenomena, such as the evolutionary implications of antibiotic resistance.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

During my undergraduate years, I tutored a student who struggled with understanding the complexities of the immune system. They found the interplay between innate and adaptive immunity overwhelming. To simplify it, I used an analogy comparing innate immunity to a castle's walls (nonspecific defense) and adaptive immunity to elite soldiers trained for specific enemies (antibodies and memory cells). Over time, the student began to excel and eventually pursued immunology as a specialization. This experience reinforced my belief that effective teaching hinges on creative explanation and personalized learning strategies.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still face in your subject?

One of the biggest challenges in biology is the sheer volume of information students must retain. Unlike subjects that rely heavily on problem-solving, biology requires memorization of intricate details, such as metabolic pathways or anatomical structures. I address this challenge by encouraging students to focus on conceptual understanding rather than rote memorization. For instance, instead of merely memorizing the Krebs cycle, I emphasize its biological significance in ATP production and link it to real-life scenarios, such as energy metabolism in athletes.

Another challenge is keeping students engaged when covering abstract topics like molecular genetics or biochemistry. To combat this, I incorporate recent scientific discoveries, such as the use of mRNA vaccines in immunology, demonstrating the relevance of biology in everyday life.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

While I am passionate about teaching, my deeper interest lies in genetics and molecular biology. The field's continuous evolution, from the Human Genome Project to CRISPR-based gene editing, is a source of endless fascination. I also enjoy discussing biotechnology applications, such as synthetic biology and gene therapy, as these areas hold the potential to revolutionize medicine and agriculture. Teaching allows me to stay updated with advancements and share my enthusiasm with students, sparking their curiosity about real-world applications of biology.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview question :-P)?

My strength as a tutor lies in my ability to transform complex biological concepts into relatable and engaging lessons. I integrate interactive learning methods, such as case studies, problem-solving scenarios, and research-based discussions, to enhance comprehension. Additionally, I focus on developing students' analytical skills, preparing them not just for exams but for deeper scientific inquiry.

Beyond technical knowledge, I aim to instill scientific curiosity, encouraging students to question and explore beyond textbooks. By fostering a passion for biology and connecting theory to real-world applications, I ensure that my students don't just learn biology-they appreciate its impact on life and society.
