About Tony

Hi, my name`s Tony. I am a private tutor specialising in Maths and Physics at A-level, and Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology at GCSE. During term time, I also tutor at a secondary school and sixth form college in West Sussex.

I was just a child when Man first set foot on the moon, but that historic moment kindled my love for all things scientific. After studying Maths and Physics at Cambridge, I was able to indulge my passion by enrolling on a PhD in Radio Astronomy at the Jodrell Bank radio telescope (the iconic backdrop for BBC’s ‘Stargazing Live’). I have since worked in Industry, where I often acted as a mentor to junior engineers, some of whom have since gone on to work for companies such as Apple and Microsoft.

I became a private tutor in 2017 and now have more than 5,000 hours` experience. My teaching philosophy is simple: to encourage my students to understand the underlying principles rather than just trying to memorise facts. I try to make my lessons fun, and want everyone to look forward to the lessons and enjoy them in the same way I do.

About the lesson

I can either run through the GCSE topic syllabus in a course of approx 10 lessons i.e. one term. Alternatively, and with much more flexibility, the student can highlight topics of interest that we can delve much deeper into. This works particularly well if the student hasn't really "got" a specific topic at school and their teacher doesn't have the resources to help individuals on a one-to-one basis.

I like the lessons to be very interactive, often starting with the student telling me what they know. I will challenge them to really understand the topic rather than just regurgitate facts. Saying that, lessons should always be fun for both tutor and student
