About Emily

I have a 1:1 BSc Hons in Biological Sciences from the University of Bristol. I am currently working with a conservation trust and I would like to tutor in my spare time.

I have experience in assisting teaching classes in both Primary and Secondary schools and have also led extra-curricular sessions as part of my work and studies. This has allowed me to gain valuable skills in teaching as well as insights into the requirements of school examinations.

About the lesson

I am able to teach Biology lessons from KS2 to A-level. I can also give Science lessons (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) at KS1 level. If the pupil would like to work on a particular topic, tutoring sessions will be focussed around that; otherwise I am happy to teach the syllabus alongside their school curriculum structure, or as a whole.

My preferred style of teaching involves giving guidance to allow the pupil find their own answers and solutions. I have found the most effective method of teaching is to introduce the pupil to the basic knowledge and techniques, then work with them to build up this knowledge to solve a particular problem. This allows the pupil to use their growing knowledge base to understand concepts and answer questions confidently, instead of simply memorising facts. This method works particularly well with one-to-one tutoring, as the tutor is better able to guide the pupil's train of thinking and address misconceptions when they arise.

I highly encourage pupils to ask questions, even if they may be beyond the scope of what is being taught; a secure understanding of a complete topic will be beneficial in learning more about that topic in the future. Moreover, questions demonstrate that a pupil is considering a topic more deeply and are often useful for detecting gaps in knowledge or misunderstandings. During tutoring sessions, I will also encourage pupils to maintain high standards of English and Mathematics, as these skills are vital for success in school exams and wider life.

I will utilise a range of resources during tutor sessions, including textbooks, study guides, (reliable) internet sources and worksheets. I will also set homework tasks, but this will be at an amount that is reasonable and useful for the pupil in question. My lessons are intended to be enjoyable and interesting, but I will ensure that each pupil comes away from a session having made considerable progress from the beginning of the lesson. I will work with the pupil to set and reach targets, with the aim of keeping them motivated to learn and keen to achieve.
