No doubt, physics is one of the most vital courses when it comes to physical sciences. Studying physics at the university level has a ton of perks that come with it.
If you live in Lagos and want to enhance your knowledge of physics, I can confidently say that you are in the right city because there are approved institutions to take physics courses.
Lagos is known as the hub of Nigeria in virtually all ramifications, education inclusive. As you read on in this article, you will discover some of the best places to take physics courses in Lagos. You will also learn the requirements needed to be admitted into a university. Before we jump into finding where to study physics courses in Nigeria, let's look at some fundamentals of physics.
Where to study physics in Nigeria?

Physics and some of its discoveries
Simply put, physics is the science of the study of nature and its properties. Some of the key aspects of physics include the atomic structure, magnetism, electricity, radiation, mechanism, etc.
Over the years, great physicists such as Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking, Marie Curie, and Galileo Galilei have helped in the advancement and new discoveries in physics. While most of the top physicists have died years ago, their good works still live on and are being taught in secondary and tertiary level of education.
Although scientific discoveries come with some discrepancies from other scientists, there have been significant achievements in the physics world in the last 25 years. Some of the latest discoveries include the following below:
-
Scientific proofs that authenticate that neutrinos have mass
The universe is made up of different particles and neutrinos are one of the uncommon particles most people know about. These particles are important in the study of nuclear physics. For years, there have been strong believe that neutrinos don't have mass. However, the assertion was squashed after a scientific conference that was held in Japan in 1998. At the conference, scientists were able to show that neutrinos had tiny masses that vary between the three types as they move through space.
-
Proof that the universe is expending
Albert Einstein was the first to propose that the universe was experiencing a rapid expansion in the 20th century. After a series of research, he admitted he was wrong about the claim and considered it as the wrongest claim in his entire findings. Howbeit, in 1997, a group of scientists discovered some shreds of evidence that actually show that the universe is expanding at a rapid rate due to strange anti-gravity force. Although Einstein thought his work was a huge flaw, he was actually not wrong in his findings. That guy must be a GENIUS!
Why did we talk about these discoveries? This is just to give you a glimpse of what physics is all about and how it relates to the world we live in.

Preparing for physics courses in Lagos, Nigeria
The Nigerian society places so much importance on sciences because development starts from there. As a Nigerian, getting a degree in sciences gives you an edge when you travel to developed countries for greener pastures.
There is never a dull moment when it comes to achieving anything in Lagos. As a matter of fact, Lagos city is number one in Nigeria when it comes to business, education, and a host of other sectors.
By now, you should know that physics, alongside mathematics, chemistry, biology, are all science subjects. As a student, you are introduced to physics at Senior Secondary 1 (SS1). However, the journey of becoming a good physics student starts even before you get into the senior secondary school. How is that possible if you may ask? Becoming a good physics student requires that you are proficient in mathematics.
With good tutelage from a professional tutor, physics, chemistry and mathematics shouldn't be any student's challenge.
There are different classes in Lagos that teach students the essential subjects for gaining admission into the university. As a science student, your major subjects will be English language, mathematics, chemistry, biology, and physics.
Whether you want to study engineering or are interested in becoming a physical scientist, physics is a major constituent that you must not take lightly. Starting your physics lesson at the right time will make it a walkover for you at the later stage. To get used to physics formula and calculations, you need to constantly practice and get a teacher that will guide you in time of any challenges. Superprof has a profile of some of the best tutors that are versed in teaching. More on how to get a tutor on Superprof at the end of this write up.

Gaining admission into the university
Gaining admission to study physics in Lagos could be done in two ways:
-
Writing WASSCE and JAMB
This is the commonest mode of entry into the University. To get admitted to study physics, you must get credit passes in 5 subjects, which include English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and biology. These are the core subjects for a science student. For JAMB, the four subjects you will write are English, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. While some universities use 180 as the cut-off mark for JAMB, others might decide to go with a score of 200. These scores are largely dependently on the general performance of students in the exam.
Note that meeting the requirements listed above does not automatically land you an admission. The five credit passes and scoring high in JAMB are just steps to securing admission. You will have to compete with other students for the limited available slots. This is why you need adequate preparations to be considered for admission.
-
Gaining admission through direct entry
This method is not so common among students but a number of people have used it to gain admission. How does direct entry work? It works by obtaining a diploma before going to university. With your diploma (either from a polytechnic or a diploma education organized by universities) you will get admitted into 200 level. The method is less common and you have to perform well in your diploma to be considered for admission.
