About Max

I am currently a student on the 'Bar Course', training to practise as a barrister in England and Wales. Alongside tutoring, I am a pro bono volunteer at a community debt advice centre and a student mentor for an education charity. I studied English at the University of Cambridge and graduated with First Class Honours with Distinction and the prize for the best performance in my year. I obtained four A*s at A level, including 100% in English Literature. After leaving Cambridge, I gained professional experience working for a year in the financial services industry. I then undertook a law degree at the University of Oxford, graduating with First Class Honours and a series of prizes. My English degree was a door-opener for me, providing the skills in literacy, analysis, empathy and communication which I depend on in my work and legal studies today. I bring a patient and friendly demeanour to all my interactions with students and clients, drawing on my experience volunteering with people who are vulnerable.

About the lesson

I am able to adjust my teaching approach to meet your goals. By default, I provide structured lessons which develop key learning skills of assimilating and applying new concepts through examples. I emphasise active participation and will not just 'talk at you'. I aim to build up your confidence as an individual with something to say and something to offer. This approach allows me to cover examination content alongside advancing essential literacy skills of reading and communicating. As someone currently undergoing training to become a barrister, I understand how important these skills are. My lessons typically last for 60 to 90 minutes. I have substantial experience tutoring and mentoring students at GCSE and A level. For several years, I have also used my experience of successfully applying to both Oxford and Cambridge to help students with Oxbridge applications, including by providing mock interviews and feedback. For advanced students, I bring my interdisciplinary experience of English and Law to help you think deeply and creatively about overarching concepts like 'meaning', 'form' and 'interpretation'.
