I worked with Barb for several years at a school in Evanston, IL. She consistently and passionately put her students first in everything she did. Barbara was my art teacher back in elementary school. She did an excellent job at teaching the technical aspects of art such as drawing, painting, collage, and clay. We worked in multiple media and she is very knowledgeable. While she taught us to express ourselves, she also taught us art literacy so we could understand what other artists are expressing. She gave us a well rounded art education that still, decades later, I feel was foundational for my own artwork and art appreciation today. I remember one day in particular at an art museum where I was loudly turning my nose at a modern art painting. She heard me and started asking me questions about what I did see in the painting, not judgmentally but in a guiding way. As I was answering, I felt like a switch flipped and suddenly everything on the canvas made sense. It was stunning and all of the tools she had given us started falling into place. I realized that I could use these tools to learn more and understand a whole world of art that I had not appreciated before. I learned that I could learn and that's a powerful lesson. Barbara has a firm teaching style that guides you forward and holds firm when you want to backslide. She was an excellent teacher and she made art a favorite class!!
