About Valentyna

Hi, I’m Valentyna, a native Russian speaker from Ukraine with over 30 years of teaching experience. I studied as a philologist and Russian language teacher and began my career in Ukraine, teaching Russian language, literacy and world literature for 8 years.

After moving to England, I taught Russian for 13 years at Ashmole Academy in London, preparing students for Edexcel GCSE and A Level examinations. I am proud that my school taught students consistently achieved 8/9s at GCSE and A/A*s at A-level.

I have also worked extensively as a private tutor and previously as an Edexcel speaking examiner. I particularly enjoy teaching privately, working with learners of all ages, from young children to adults. My private students have included complete beginners, students with some Russian, and those who needed help building confidence and consistency. All of my private GCSE and A Level students have achieved the highest grades — only Grade 9 at GCSE and only A* at A-Level.

I believe excellent results come from knowing exactly what matters. My approach is focused, purposeful and informed by examination requirements, without unnecessary material.

What inspires me most is seeing a student who once struggled or lacked confidence realise that they can succeed through hard work, dedication and the right support. I love creating that spark for learning, building confidence and helping each student achieve their full potential.

About the lesson

My lessons are friendly, focused and tailored to each student. Whether they are starting Russian from scratch, have some previous knowledge or are aiming for the highest GCSE or A-Level grades, I adapt my teaching to their individual needs.

I first identify what the student is confident with and where they need more support. This might be grammar, vocabulary, essay writing, the IRP, speaking, pronunciation, confidence or exam technique.

My aim is not simply to prepare students for an exam. I want them to become genuinely good at Russian and confident using the language. I encourage them to communicate, express their ideas and enjoy speaking Russian, even if they did not particularly like the subject when they first started.

Lessons include speaking and conversation, grammar and vocabulary, essay and IRP preparation, exam practice and detailed feedback. As the exams get closer, we can increase the intensity of preparation with mock speaking exams, timed work and focused revision.

I work with students of all abilities and personalities, taking the time to understand their individual needs, motivations and goals. My aim is to create a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, build confidence, develop their skills and discover a genuine love for Russian.

Valentyna is simply an amazing tutor. I couldn't ask for a better teacher. She led me through my Russian A Level and GCSE exams with me feeling confident, prepared and motivated to get an A*! She always has excellent learning materials for each step of the way, as well as having an outstanding grasp and understanding for the exam. Ever since I started having lessons with her from Year 8, she consistently proved that she had great exam technique and knowledge of the subject and the language that she shared with me. Valentyna is also always happy to help with any queries and misunderstandings, and always encouraged me to come to her for any questions regarding Russian. I am very happy to say that I have achieved an A* with her help. ️
