About Susan

Born in Stavanger, Norway and raised in the United States, I imbibed a love of languages from my dad, who spoke fluent Norwegian. My passion for languages has led me to study nine and counting - I love nothing more than spending my leisure time reading and practicing my Latin.
I lived and worked in Germany for 17 years. I have a Master's Degree in Germanic Languages and Literature from Tufts University. As an undergrad majoring in German at Smith College, I minored in English. In short, I live and breathe language.
Currently, I work as a special ed teacher, a profession that I love, and which has taught me nearly unlimited patience and honed my natural tendency to point out the positive things that students accomplish while I gently assist them in making progress.

About the lesson

I have taught German and English in many different settings: at the university level as a grad student, in language schools in Boston, MA, Portland, ME, and Munich, Germany, as well as privately from my own home, both in-person and online.
Fun is key. I add to my wealth of experience and knowledge truly lively and enjoyable classes. I incorporate all the senses through visual aids, games, lively conversation, great literature, music, and even cuisine!
I know the pitfalls of learning German and add to that a perfect accent which has often fooled Germans into thinking that I am a native speaker. You get the best of both worlds!
I have studied many different languages and know grammar and language mechanics like few others. I can answer all of your questions.
While I lived in Germany, I taught English to all ages, from first grade to adult, from my home and for two language schools in Munich. I taught students from all over Europe and trained German business executives for a Europe-wide standardized English test, the BEC exam.
